P2 update

Good morning all
I can understand the arguments for and against buying blind. However, the cost of the Hornby loco is about a third of what it would cost for a complete P2 kit.
If one is capable of improving Hornby's offering then it is still a lot cheaper, and if one is capable of converting the Hornby loco into an original Earl Marischal, then one has the first two P2s for the price of one kit. This has to be a great "two for one" offer.

I think it comes down to Grahame's phrase 'I definitely want one'; not all buyers will be saying that. Many RTR models, particularly ones with 'wow' factor, are discretionary purchases (in truth, all model railway items are, in that we dont strictly need them to live - but the number of people who actually need a P2 to support a layout concept must be quite few).

It's not a good comparison perhaps, but I had no hesitation in pre-ordering one of Bachmann's LMS diesels, because I had the confidence it would be somewhere up close to the standard of the prototype Deltic and the Bee Pee, and the early reviews look like backing up my judgment. If the alternative had been a kit, it wouldnt have got a look in; not because I couldnt build one but because it's not essential to what I want to do and there are many other things I'd rather put that time into. As I said, it's an imperfect comparison because there is also the Dapol RTR model, but again if that had been the only option, I wouldnt have been bothered.

It's just getting painful to watch now don't you think ? I can't remember a build up to the release of a model like it, so much anticipation and speculation. HURRY UP, lets have them, stop teasing and get them made. In all fairness though, even though Hornby have let go of producing models up to their mid 2000's levels (A3 A4 etc etc) it still looks to be an amazing model, I'm really looking foreward to it.

Nice review of mock up P2 in the latest BRM magazine. Tony Wright has given a good review but he is far to kind to Hornby on the detail changes made to a current Loco compared to previous Hornby Models due to saving money.



The Loco uses the non corridor type Tender whilst a superb version of this Tender already exists , Hornby have gone to expense of creating a new version with Moulded handrails. I can see no logic in this whatsoever. Perhaps the moulds have been withheld from Hornbys current factory who knows? The costing on this bears no comparison to the saving of producing the model with a few small straight moulded handrails. But is only mentioned in passing by Tony.





The review however is spolit by the following comments in the text relating to and I quote



" Despite ignorant speculation by some of those who inhabit the (sometimes) twilight world of websites" this comment simply relates to the use of moulded handrails on the model !!.

He then continues. "No doubt some will wring their hands but are they prepared to go the whole way and add say £30.00 to the cost of the model?

He then mentions that he could be accused of nepotism that he should make such comments (why has he got too?) to defend Hornbys decision relating to cost cutting. He then mentions the Backhead which whilst nicely detailed is not detail printed theron and the lack of the oil drive as used on the current Hornby A4's and even on the Railroad version "



Whilst not personally bothering me in the slightest. I did find them to be most strange and unecessary comments to be made and published in the context of a review of a mock up Locomotive model.



Who knows some of the lacking features may even be on the production model anyway ?

The only flaw with the video is while it makes a prolonged show of the poor A2/2 struggling, the P2 appears stage left already moving , shame the video didnt show the P2 moving 23 coaches from standstill or no mention of what the A2/2 could actually move from a standstill.
No reason to believe the P2 didnt do it, but it would have been a much more impressive piece of viewing.
