I understood that 10000's original boiler was a Yarrow type...

The boiler was used to provide steam at Darlington Works for many years

I, too, believe that the Hush-hush loco boiler would have been a good source for turbine power.
I had read somewhere that Bulleid had the same feeling, but forget the reference.
What is the Yarrow type boiler, and how does it differ from 10000's original boiler?

10000's original boiler was built at the Yarrow boilerworks and shipbuilders company. It was a three barrel version of their more usual four barrel type marine boiler. According to most reference material, the loco worked as intended fresh from the works, but started to show problems as more modifications were made to 'tweak' the design - turbine-driven oil pumps, steam-reversing gear, to name but two of the 'tweaks'. Does anyone know off-hand if the engine crews from the compound Atlantics were ever allocated for duty with her?

Good morning all
Thanks for the info Manxman, it confused me a little as I had always understood the boiler to be Yarrow built..
I wonder if there are advantages in having two steam drums against one.

Under normal conditions - read maritime - there are, as the steam pressures can get as high as 750 lbs. However, in order to keep the boiler within the loading gauge of the LNER, with the style of water-tube boiler to be used, only a single steam drum could be used.

6399 'Fury' used a much smaller boiler by comparison, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LMS_6399_Fury
