Yes, we have a dynamometer car already to hand (courtesy of Roy Mears - it recently guested on 'Gresley Beat') and we will be running it in formation with some streamliner coaches and a certain A4 at the helm. Of course, we will need to depict it crawling through the station at 25mph (due to engineering work), and then accelerating hell for leather towards the south (and immortality).

Couple of pix of the newly-completed Dyno car, which is available for use on the layout. Have seen it in the flesh (the teak finish is lovely - photos don't really do it justice) but has yet to be tried out on Grantham.

That's very nice. Did he have any trouble getting the lettering? That's one thing I haven't looked into as yet.

Observation for anyone who, like me, has rushed out to the post box this morning to get the cheque away: there's an article and a number of interior photographs in LNER Reflections ed. Nigel Harris. It's a cracking collection of photos generally which can usually be found second hand fairly cheaply.

Looking again at the model, I'm asking myself whether it still had the red oxide roof in the 1930s?

I've had a reply from Roy Mears (the builder) re the lettering on the dynamometer car.

He had them specially made! However, he would be quite happy to coordinate a further 'run' of transfers if sufficient folks were interested. How many potential dynamometer car builders are there out there?(!) I'll add a post to the dynamometer car thread as well.

I'll ask him about the roof colour Jonathan, as I wondered about that myself.

Latest arrival at Grantham

Allocated to Grantham for shunting in the goods yard. There is a picture of her on shed in the Cawston book (p.47)

Loco built by Tony Wright (SE Finecast kit), as part of a 'horse trading' arrangement. My part of the bargain is to motorise the signals on Little Bytham.

Recent work on the layout has included getting the signal boxes looking a little more like.


Yard Box uses a Knightwing kit as the base with a D&S etch for upper half. This (the etch) isn't an exact match for the prototype but I'm happy enough with it. Some weathering/blending in still to do and the outside walkway still needs its guard rails.


North Box is more of a 'will do for now' creation, using another Knightwing kit with the parts from the first one that weren't used for Yard Box. North Box was a double-sided box so there are windows on the other side. I'm changing over the name boards as they were white type on black background in LNER days.

This thread has been badly neglected of late, but here it is again, bumped to the top of the pile, mainly because a portion of Grantham will be on show at the Nottingham East Midlands exhibition this coming weekend. The layout should be found rubbing shoulders with Leeds Central in one of the backstage rooms.

Yes, what has been dubbed 'mini-Grantham' will be on display, masquerading as a demonstration stand. It should look something like this:




The title of the demo is 'building Grantham' and the plan is to have some stock moving up and down, both to demonstrate the modified Peco trackwork in use and the flexibility afforded by the 'simple' (ha!), non-DCC control system.

Do say 'hi' if you're coming along.

The central plain crossing was handbuilt (see below); the rest is standard Peco (with a small amount of 'hacking')
