I remember reading that as Capercaillie it hauled a twenty two coach train during wartime. So it certainly showed P2 haulage power.

By the time that 2007 is finished (5-7 years), Scotland may be an independent country, so I think that the loco should be given an English name.
Whatever name is chosen, I want to ride behind it. I shall be 72-74 when it is completed, so I won't have that many more chances to travel on a train hauled by a new steam loco.
I'd like to see a copy of the rebuilt W1 to follow the new P2, but I doubt if that will happen.

I can only hope that this P2 retains it's structural and mechanical integrity much better than 60163. Either that or better material usage in construction and operational and maintenance procedures are put in place to avoid the boiler and firebox problems that 60163 had / still has. If 60163's frames are already cracking, I'd hate to see how long 2007's frames and cartazzi truck last with that wheelbase......
Anyway, as 60163 was named after a gulf war aircraft, perhaps No. 2007 / 60543 'Buccaneer' - I'd kind of expect 2007 to wear more than apple green over her career.

Wasn't it a common case in service that frames would crack. I'm sure I read A3s often needed new frames when they went in for a General.

The cracking is said to be rather extensive due to the way in which 163 is operated, not having proper cool down cycles. It eats into some, if not all of the 'mainline' locos but it's evidently rather rapid in 60163's case in that she's only five years old. She has already had a new drag box and I've been told that the cartazzi truck isn't in the best of shapes either.
As this is supposed to be an LNER forum and the P2s proper were only ever seen in proper LNER green livery I feel fully justified in saying that any attempt to paint 2007 in a horrible fantasy BR livery could only count as an act of tasteless stupidity or outright vandalism!

I certainly agree with it all (I personally think the smokebox casing looks horrible in blue), but the problem with preservation is that authenticity in livery doesn't always apply - 4472, D9016, 85101, 5972, 45699, 48624, 3717, 92214.
I'm surprised that none of the P2's weren't painted black, by 1944 Britain was in the 5th year of the war, and if I'm correct, steam locos were overhauled every 18 months or so, and if Mr Thompson had rebuilt these locos as they came up for shopping, most of these locos, would have been shopped at least once during the war years (1939-1944) then, they were still being repainted Green, with full lining ?? Hmmmmmmmmm.
