Goods to Wearhead in 40s/50s? + carriages?
Passenger trains on this line were catered for by the J21 until its closure, but what engines were used to provide a goods service?
And whilst on the subject, photos of passenger trains in LNER days show a variety of old carriages, clerestory and elliptical roofed NER. What carriages were used in early BR days?
Thanks for any help.

I used to have a large collection of photo's (now sold) which I saved to my hard drive and the commonest type apart from the J21 was the J39 -64719, 64927 noted. I'm sure I have seen an A8 hauled goods photo but cannot confirm it.

Thanks for the response. I see that Union Models has now sold out of its J39 in BR colours, sadly, but I could try a new set of transfers on their LNER one.

Farish do have a J39 in the works. I'm not sure the current status butit was announced along with the A1 Peppercorn. Can't be far from release if it hasn't been released yet...
Detail will be much better than Union Mills, although pulling power probably won't be as good (but hopefully better than I hear the WD is!)

Thanks Richard, I'll watch out for that; but before this thread gets transferred onto the modelling board, has anyone any comments to pass on appropriate carriages? Are there any LNER-period examples that would be appropriate, as opposed to NER ones? I feel it is far too early for Thompson examples to have drifted down the this branch, but were any Gresley examples seen?

I think I have a number of photographs in books for the NE Region. I'll try and note some references later this evening.
As far as I can remember, they were ex-NER 52" Clerestories, and some arc-roof stock. There may have been some 52" LNER non-corridor vehicles as well. Presumably much as standard for the NE at that time.

Graham,
The carriages worked to Wearhead appear many and various, if one looks at the Weardale Railway website and the disused stations one too.
I am, personally, of the opinion that four coach services would only have been on a Saturday, when most photographers would have turned up. Not sure about the three coach turns seen on the above pages. Perhaps Darlington '?' Link sets were three carriages in the early BR period. The Wear Valley service finished in June 1953.
The 1932 workings are certainly NER stock, and only two carriages.
As to particular diagrams of vehicles in the early BR period, again a whole mixture appears in the photos (SO?). A non-corridor composite and a 5-compartment brake third, of the same non-corridor configuration, are my thoughts, with an extra all third at busy times.
But, I think I can see a GCR clerestory Brake Third in one picture? A Gresley pattern non-corridor brake in another. And steel panelled stock too. I cannot be sure of the types of the latter.
Apologies that this is not more definitive.

Re: Goods to Wearhead in 40s/50s? + carriages?
I'd assumed that was an NER clerestory, but then I'm unable to distinguish the varieties. Similarly I'm only assuming that the elliptical-roofed carriages are NER rather than Gresley. I would assume (on likely requirements) a brake composite, first class being unlikely to be in great demand, and a third brake or composite brake, plus a third in the centre. It is interesting to see the comment that three carriages would be normal - I'd rather assumed that two would be sufficient and the third one for special occasions - such as the last day as on the Weardale Railway photos. Thanks for reminding me about the disused stations source, I'd seen that before but forgotten it.

How about this one? A clerestory, an NER (or Gresley) elliptical roof, then a four wheeler with guards ducket? In 1948....
(Edit of previous posting moved in case it had been missed by any interested party.)
