Yarmouth/Lowestoft-York route

Post by Tom F »

Looking through my 1938 WTT, I'm trying to work out the roots of trains from East Anglia through to York, Mainly so I can work out if there were loco changes at places such as March and I believe Lincoln was also a changing point.

Cheers

Doesn't the WTT give you that information, and crew change points, water stops etc?

I thought that was their main function.

I wasn't very clear in my opening post. My WTT is for the North Eastern Area, so tells me the trains origin or destination, but I basically loose track of it once past Doncaster.

A brief reference appears on p119 of the Railway Magazine Jan - June 1922. It appears that there was now only one train between York and L'pool St and no return working. There was a 10.25am corr restaurant exp from York to Ipswich via March, Ely and Bury. The train reaching York at 10.25pm comes from Yarmouth at 3.05pm via Dereham, Lynn, Wisbech and March. It comments that the service was intended for passengers in the eastern counties rather than those from London. There is no mention of loco changes. I hope this helps.

The train we used to know as the 'York - Yarmouth' certainly changed locos at Lincoln Central. In my 'spotting days at Central I remember it regularly being hauled by a B16 as far as Lincoln, at least up to the early 1960s. Sorry, I can't remember what took over - probably a B1.

According to my summer 1959 timetable, the York - Yarmouth left York at 1015, arriving Lincoln at 1210, departing 1218 and arriving March at 1349 and Yarmouth Vauxhall at 1707. l

Many thanks pyewipe. I don't see any reason why things would be any different 20 years previous. Lincoln seems logical choice.

In the 1950's summer timetable the Saturday York-Yarmouth working was always hauled by a pair of York rebuilt B16's. One of them would return through Selby around 4pm with I assume the return working. On rare occasions a Lincoln B1 would make an appearance presumably because of a B16 failure.
In 1957 York received the last batch of standard 5mt's 73167 to 73171 and they made some appearances over that summer on the Saturday working but only as singletons.

I'm sure that I saw Britannias on the York - Yarmouth on the GN&GE section before diesels took over, but that might have been as late as the early 1960s when diesels displaced them from Norwich to March.

There were some B17s at March for a while in the 1950s. I wonder how many of those put in an appearance as far as Lincoln?

Hi Tom,

My 1954 Lincoln Pax WTT shows the following York trains into deepest East Anglia:

Train 23. Dep York 0950 SO for Yarmouth Vauxhall. Stops Bootham Junction for water.

Train 29. Dep York 1006 SX for Lowestoft and Yarmouth. Stops Lincoln Central at 1210 for 6 minutes. Engine change not specified in WTT.

Train 37. Dep Sunderland 0855 SO for Yarmouth Vauxhall. Stops Lincoln Central at 1247 for 8 minutes. Engine change not specified in WTT.

Train 57. Dep York 1453 SO for Cambridge. Stops Lincoln Central at 1632 for 5 minutes. Engine change not specified in WTT.

I know it's not exactly your exact period but it should be indicative.

Regards,

Vernon

The March B17's went as far as York on the Colchester-Newcastle in the 1950's but the usual loco was a March V2.When the Brits arrived at March they appeared on this working .Sometimes on the summer Saturday return working double headed Brits appeared on the York-Selby-Doncaster leg and beyond I assume.

Very helpful information gents.

Vernon, from what your WTT says, it seem Lincoln was a general changing point. Interesting locomotives there in 1938. :)

March B17s were the usual loco for the Harwich - Liverpool 'boat train' until Britannias took over in late 1958.

As 50C notes, V2s were used on the Newcastle - Colchester working, but curiously not normally on the Harwich - Liverpool.

It is interesting how all trains mentioned use Central station, because I always thought they changed engines at Pyewipe Junction - but maybe that was just the excursion trains to the coast which may have traversed the avoiding line. I'm sure there are Pyewipe loco change photos in railway magazines from my youth.

Edited; because I am now beginning to doubt my memory. Maybe I was remembering goods trains?

There is a good photo here http://www.davesrailpics.bravehost.com/ ... nsteam.htm

(scroll down to the 5th photo)

showing the York-Yarmouth changing engines at Central.

Further down the page is a B17 on the Parkestone Quay to Newcastle in 1957.

I've just been reading 'Great Central Railway in LNER Days Vol 2' Talks about the York portion of the 'North Country Continental'. Appears to have worked through to Lincoln where it joined the main trains. Always a Lincoln loco worked to York, so it does seem that Lincoln was a main changing point for locos.
