So repainted Bachmann base with decent Hornby A3 bits and Brassmaster add ons.

Tom, I know I'm catching up after a period of some absence, but I must say I am delighted that you are modelling the earlier period too now! Do you regret letting the W1 go now?
Good morning all
I had a gear come loose on my Gresley Garratt and it was a pig to sort out. I have modified the chassi to make it easier if it happens again. Whilst this was happening, I searched through back posts for info on the Garratt.
I found that "Columbo" actually saw two LMS Garratts at York during the 50's.
This means they must have worked over the ECML at some stage.
I don't know if they worked to York as early as 1950, but you have the precedent to run the LMS Garratt into York shed.
I wonder if they worked over Woodhead?

This is where things become a touch difficult but still interesting. York had it's own LMS Shed in the 1930s, (when running in 1950s I ignored this fact as the lines became more blurred in BR period with all the sheds at York coming under the North Eastern Region) but in the grouping period, the LMS locos would have stayed at York South. Although Leaman Road is fictional in the sense it's not strictly the same size as the real York North, but it is very much the North Eastern Shed.
With the mass of LNER traffic, I'm now feeling that I don't need to model the LMS side of things.

That's interesting, I had assumed that York was NER, NER, and more NER with a dash of LNER after grouping.
The LMS obviously had running powers to York. With my limited knowledge of the LMS, I had thought that their Garratts merely worked south from Toton.

The LMS had use of Queen Street (closed 1932) and later space at York South, it did not own a shed at York.
In his book North Eastern Locomotive Sheds Ken Hoole states that 'about 1939 the LMS Garratts began to appear on iron ore trains from Northamptonshire'.
I am sure the LMS Garratts did not work over Woodhead.
The garratts came to York from the Church Fenton direction so only ran on the ECML from Chaloners Whin Junction.
I think they ran to York north yard.
They ran to York until they were scrapped.
There are several pics about showing them running into York.

I am finding this very interesting. I am looking at routes in my pre-grouping atlas, and I've found the line through Church Fenton linking up with the S&K (joint NER&MR).
Pity they didn't work over Woodhead, but they went through South Yorkshire.

As has been mentioned elsewhere, Myself Atlantic, Jwealleans and friends were invited to a visit to Tony Wright's Little Bytham last Sunday.
A really enjoyable day, with great banter, food and playing trains.
