G'Day Gents

1938 was a watershed year, Germany had annexed Austria, and wanted Czechoslovakia, Britain had mobilized the fleet, and had increased aircraft production, new ships for the Navy were laid down, Chamberlain was trying to buy time with Nazi Germany, so sacrificed Czechoslovakia to Germany, it bought us a year.

I know lots of the kids evacuated came back home again, only to be sent away again.

My Grandfather was in the Navy, he had just left after his 21 years, and was called up again within a couple of months, he then served until 1945, during that time he went to America to bring back one of the 50 old destroyers, she was HMS Richmond, the uncle and aunt my mum was sent to live with, there surname was 'Richmond' an awful lot of coincidences eh!! I've always liked Richmond, I had a Honeymoon there, and stayed there with my ( same) Aunt before we went to Shildon for the 150 celebrations.

Lot of Richmonds there Manna. No wonder there was confusion! :lol:

4901 is now finished. This has to be one of the longest weathering sessions I've done so far. I did 2 half hours this morning, went out for an hour or so and came back and continued work on her for another 2 half hours. So we are looking at 5 hours in total.

I think the time spent was worth it though. A4s have a particular look with how the dirt collects on the valances and access hatches. I had too photos of 4901 which I worked from in black and white, plus several colour photos of Garter Blue A4s in 1938/39 in the 'LNER locomotives in Colour' book.

Hopefully I've captured something of that look. Click the photo to enlarge, as it shows the locos truer and richer colour brought out by the Klear.

Sometimes you can find a real bargain on fleebay and full thanks has to go to my friend and fellow modeller James Wells for pointing this one out to me. A lot of kit built stuff is rather shoddy to say the least, but this little gem was listed as a J72.....when it's actually a J77 with Worsdell Cab.

Nobody else bid and I got it for the starting price of £85.99. It appears to be live chassis, but that can easily be rectified. Nice looking build but will need to be
renumbered to 1431 to be a York loco.

I now have a loco for bringing the loco coal wagons on shed!

I spotted this loco as it appears that the seller does not know a lot about modelling, and might miss a few gems.
I hope you have a good model, and at least it's gone to a good home.

Yes, I get the impression too that he doesn't know his stuff (thankfully for me!) I'm sure it would have gone for more if it had been listed as a J77. The guy was also selling an N2 I believe.

Morning all
Yesterday we had the pleasure of a guest to visit Leaman Road.
Mr Graeme King of this Parish joined us yesterday afternoon. I would like to say Graeme had brought the stock solely for posing on Leaman Road, alas no, it's for the layout that I'm taking my stock to run, on Sunday.

Anyhow without further or do, lets see how a 1938 Leaman Road layout would look.

York did have a single D2 allocated in 1938, so this is a nice example sat on one of the loco sidings awaiting it's duty.

Graeme's V2 which utilises an A3 boiler on the Bachmann body... looks more like a V2 than Bachmann's current offering!

I do like large boiler Ivatt Atlantics. A C1 is coaled under York Cenotaph. York had two C1s allocated in 1938.

ex GCR B4 6104 sits on Shed.... Graeme says he has seen a photo of this loco at Escrick, South of York.... that is good enough for me!

ex GCR D10 sits under the Coaling Cenotaph. I do have a couple of photos showing ex GCR 4-4-0s at York in the late 30s.

Finally I'm glad Graeme brought this Tourist Stock Buffet along. I have a colour photo showing the LNER Tourist Stock in Leeman Road Carriage Sidings. Will have to invest in a rake one day.

Thanks again to Graeme for letting me pose his stock on Leaman Road...as some of you will be thinking, there was no NER stock. I think that was the only thing that was missing really. I have plenty of kit building to do it would seem!

Nearly finished a upgrade on a Bachmann V2 hopefully a little bit similar to Graeme's excellent model. A really horrible moulding reminded of something from Triang it is that poor .

In case I wasnt clear it will be still using the Bachmann moulding as base, most of the rest is Hornby A3 :D

One for Hornby to do if they have any sense :shock:

Are you still using the Bachmann body then. After seeing Graeme's I'm wondering about going hole hog with A3 boiler from the firebox forward.

Tom,yes I am . Couldnt see much point in going down that route as the cab will still be dire if you changed the boiler only. You would have to use a A4 cab as a base if its the right size ? It started to be too expensive for what the end result would be .
You would also need to add new handrails to the Tender to replace the Golf balls !! (why) that Bachmann are still using!!. Why are they still not painting handrails on models too ? I saw their dire old A4's today all with black handrails :lol:
So repainted Bachmann base with decent Hornby A3 bits and Brassmaster add ons.


Should be done this week and will post some pics on my thread.
