N gauge LNER products
Hi guys
Following Ixions announcement concerning their first locomotive and the subsequent postings I've read on several forums I've started thinking about the rtr situation for LNER locos in N gauge.
The first thing that struck me is the lack of tank engines at all (other than the old GF J69 and the horrible GP tank!) - personally I'd like to see rtr lomotives from the following classes J50, J52, J72, N2, V1. All of these are available in OO so why not N?
Overall (excluding Union Mills) am I right in thinking that the only LNER locos available rtr in N are A3s, A4s, V2s and the soon to be released B17?

Bachmann/Farish have the J94. This has been produced in LNER livery in the past because I have one. The BR "ex-LNER" livery is the most produced.
Also Bachmann/Farish have produced the 8F in LNER O6 guise, although the tender is the wrong type for the loco number (rivets vs. welded). If you're lucky the O6 might still be on some shelves - I bought mine just over 12 months ago from Hattons when it was clear that they were near the end of their stock.
The RODs, D49, and a Mogul seem to be the big gaps in the tender LNER range. Then I think going back and filling in the gaps - eg. a better A3, a RTR Thompson B1, etc.

I have 2 J94s and 4 06's, but these are in various states, and if I do a full run of all 4 together, it can take a few laps before they all get going, although I am converting to BR really, due to lack of LNER, but my last loco (I have) is LNER Mallard, and I have my eye on another on ebay, but at the post office is BR Union o SA.
One of the 06s though has one of the tender wheels uncovered (don't know where that bit went!)

I didn't even think of the J94 and O6 - there outside my period of modelling... Thanks for pointing this out.
I supose I could claim that they're not really LNER locos, being purchased by the LNER to make up war time shortages - but I'm not going to as I'd be shot down in flames!!! Besides, I'm I right in thinking that some O6's were built by the Doncaster works and sold back to the LMS shortly before the formation of BR?

History of the 06 from the Bachmann Collectors club vol5 no.1 Autumn 2004;
[The LNER Model] Dates from the period during the second world war when members of the class went to the LNER as cover for a shortage of motive power. The LNER constructed sixty stainer 2-8-0s (nos.8500-8559) at Doncaster and Darlington which were regarded as being on short term loan, and which carried LMS lettering rather than that of the LNER. Later in March 1943, a further sixty-eight locos were ordered, with twenty-five to be built at Brighton, the remaining Fourty-Three at Darlington. The Farish 06 comes from the former batch of locomotives. All carried plain black livery, with those not carring LMS letteringturned out with either NE, or later LNER on their tender sides. Smoke box number plates were fitted to no.s3125 to 3147.
The 06 class went through a series of renumberings. Initial deliveries carried the same numbers as the B1 class 4-6-0s. Edward Thompson brought in a new numbering system from 1946 onwrds, and when some 200 'WD' class 2-8-0s were purchased by the LNER, the 06 numbers changed once again to accommodate the new arrivals.
On return to the LMS, they were once again renumbered, a received the '4' prefix following nationalisation (nos.48705-48772), in common with other Midland Reigion Classes.
Gradually, as the War Department '07' class 2-8-0 Austerities began to filter through, those 8Fs which had been loaned to the LNER, were returned to the LMS, the last returning home in the Summer of 1947. By January 1948, the fianal '06' was returned to the LMS, and the Stainer locomotives forray on Eastern soil was at and end.
The Grham Farish model carries the number 3107. it was one of twenty-five built at Brighton works (no.s7651-7675) and dlivered new to Neasdon for running in turns. The locomotive recivied this number on 27th April 1946, having originally been no.7658 when built in July 1944.it to carry this number for l than a year, becomming no.3507 on 5th March 1947. It was returned to the LMS in October 1947 to become LMS No. 8712 and BR no.48712 in January 1950.
3107 spent periods at Both York and Heaton, the later had an allocation of now fewer than 32 06s and 8Fs combined.
Withdrawal came in June 1967.

wehf: That is what I've done. It is just a repaint job. Yes there are minor cabinet changes but these are very minor compared to the frame problem.
I also fitted DCC but the result takes quite a bit of current - it trips the new Digitrax system the club has. I was waiting until the DCC gurus fixed the current limits - large trains of 4-5 modern diesels do the same.

The Dapol M7 converts very nicely to an LNER G7 0-4-4T
It is very early as the last ones went in the mid 30s but it looks good and bridges the gap nicely. Mine is not quite accurate as I have not rounded off the tank edges nor reduced the coal rails to 3 but in N it is hard to tell

Hi
I have just found that www.keykits.net do 2 Beaver whitemetal tank engine kits, a J52 and a J63. the J53 fits the Farish Pannier chassis and the J63 fits the old Minitrix LMS Dock tank chassis if they are still obtainable.

that G7 looks good. bravo!
I have the Beaver J63- and frankly I am struggling to find anything suitable to power it. The Minitrix chassis is still around on ebay, but the quality is useless- and if you run code 55, forget about it!!
Anyone fancy taking the commission to scratchbuild an Ngauge outside cylinder 0-6-0 chassis with a scale wheelbase of 11' for me????!!!! (I am serious btw!)
Will
p.s- while we're on the subject of converting/disguising other locos, I have always thought the GEM L&Y Aspinall looks an awful lot like the ex-MSLR J58/9 tanks. Infact, it is on my to-do list to make one!

Yes Will, i can see what you are getting at about the GEM kit a little work could product a pretty good representation of the J58/9. Regarding the chassis, I don't know of anyone who can help with this - my own chassis scratchbuilding efforts have all ended in failure to date. Someone at the 2mm Association might be able to help though or try N brass for one of their chassis kits (don't ask me about the quality though, i've never bought one)...
Tony, thanks for posting you G7 picture again, I think that looks the business and I've got my own M7 to convert in the future following your original post. Mine might be a bit out of place in Hitchin but hey its my railway!

0-6-0 chassis
Hey ,I have had a thought would it be possible to fit a modified 61xx farish prairie chassis to the Beaver J63 kit.It has outside cylinders but is it too big??

haven't tried, but I would doubt it would fit! There is about 10mm between the sides of the tanks, the smokbox is a solid casting, and crucially, there is only about 7.5mm depth to the tank sides.
It doesnt even fit over the Farish BR 04 chassis without a lot of effort (and I cant think of anything much smaller than that!)
What is needed is a chassis like the minitrix one with a veritcally mounted motor in the cab, and therefore nothing else protuding into the body cavity above the footplate which would obscruct the tank/ boiler.
cheers for trying! I am ALMOST tempted to put another Farish 04 chassis on it, add dummy cylinder covers over the jackshafts and see if that looks even a little bit like an outside cylinder loco!! The minitrix chassis is sooo darn expensive on ebay- and will not run on code 55 AND has blank wheels AND no coupling rod- just a piston rod driving the rearmost wheel!
What would be worse?!?!

I have been thinking about coaches, and other than the obvious kits from various manufacturers, the old Farish Suburbans looks a lot like ex-NER or GCR stock; and
Does anyone else think these two are actually really quite similar????!
All that would be needed is a repaint to teak livery/ probably brown in later LNER days- the matchboarding is quite fine so would probably be best drawn on.
Oh, and has anyone thought those plastic DelPrado engines, such as a 'Claud' could be motored? I knwo they are 1:160 so probably a non-starter though?
