Council Tax refund

Post by Kestrel »

For a change of scenery from LNER matters, you may be paying too much council tax.

Go into www.voa.gov.uk,

click on ‘Check your Council Tax Band’

enter your postcode in the box

and you’ll see the houses in your road and the tax bands for them.

If you see a similar house to yours that is in a lesser band than yours, investigate further. You could well be in line for a reduction and a refund.

I rang the phone number given and was fobbed off by a job’s worth who said my band was correct so I went to my local MP.

One letter from him and they jumped. The result being it was reduced by a band and a refund in return for 20 years. From start to finish took about two months.

The amount refunded can go back to April 1993, when Council Tax started, if you were in the property at that time, or back to whenever you moved into your house if it was since 1993. Either way, it’s money in your pocket.

If you add an extension, or whatever, the tax band won’t be changed until the house is sold, so if you’re contemplating doing an extension, get the tax band reduction sorted out first and then do the extension.

Good luck chaps. Start the ball rolling in your area. I have in mine.
