Three A4s

Post by richard »

Not the best photo, but it isn't very often than I'm the first to break LNER preservation news with a photo :-)
As most of you probably know, "Dominion of Canada" was moved to York yesterday. This morning was the first time all three of the static A4s were together around the turntable at York.

The museum was very busy today with the school holidays, enthusiasts, and journalists (Look North had an item about the three a few minutes ago).

Probably the first time any three A4s have been around a York shed turntable since the 1960s?
And possibly the first time these particular three have been together? (Dwight and Mallard were different batches and built for different duties, although they got moved around a lot of course)

Managed to get on the footplate of "Sir Nigel Gresley" last Monday whilst she was in steam, so four out of six in one trip (and 10 days) isn't bad going...

All three at Top Shed Many times ( inc No 7 when she arrives) AND possibly No 9( when on the Lizzie), so five of them well may have rubbed shoulders in the past

No doubt Tommy could well have the definitive answer

I was planning to go to York today, but on hearing that 4489's cab doors, cylinder cock pipes and long guard irons have not yet been refitted from the move, I postponed my trip

Hi Richard,

I managed 5 in two days:

First 21/5 - 4489 at Shildon then 60007 at Grosmont.
Then 22/5 - 4468, 60008 and 60009 at York.

If I wasn't rushing back to take my wife and friends out to the movies, I would have done all 5 in one day.

Add to that an A3, K4, V2 (and an EM1), I managed almost all of the surviving Gresley engines.

Back home now in Australia, it all seems like a blur.

Most I've done so far is four in one day; 8, 9, 19 and 22 all in York - 8 and 22 on static, with 9 and 19 on the GB VI

Excluding Gresleys, I picked up quite a few other LNER / NER /S&D locos...

B1 "Impala" (okay, in disguise)
Y7 (at Beamish)
Locomotion No. 1
Derwent
Tennant 2-4-0
Q7

Lambton No. 29 (surely double points as I fired and drove her :-) )
ES1
Aerolite
Long Boiler No. 1275 (photo reccie for my model which has started, honest)
V2
A3
EM1
G5 New Build (more on that in the next day or two)
Stirling No. 1
Grimsby & Immingham Tram (the ex-Gateshead example at Beamish)
The Seaham Harbour Locos, also at Beamish

I've forgotten another loco or two(?)

I missed DP1 - where is it these days? I was expecting to see it at Shildon?
