Bomb Damage

Post by Iron Duke »

Glancing through my now "caption enhanced & restored scrapbooks" I saw these three uncaptioned pics.
Sadly photographers unknown.
I assume both wrecks are bomb damage, but where and when?
Were any of these returned to service?
The other pic I assume would be during loco trials 1948?
Again not sure.....
Any observations or comments gratefully received :)

The A4 4-4-0 is on a spare set of wheels and I would say the pic is at Doncaster works as part of the assessment after she had been badly damaged in the Baedecker raid on York. It is the former Gadwall and was too far gone to repair although the tender did get repaired and reused.
I agree with Mickys comments about the first pic but have no idea about the Atlantic.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

I think you'll find the last picture is an O2 and I've seen it fairly recently in a book - maybe Top Shed? I'll have a look.

G'Day Gents
In the first pic, if you look carefully, does the smokebox door look damaged !!!

I've not seen the third pic before and I've never heard of a 03 being damaged before !!

The second photo is 4469 at Doncaster after the York raid taken on 18th May 1942 Neg no 42/56.

The third photo is O1 3473 damaged by bomb explosion taken on 25/10/1940 Neg No 40/96. Ni 4575 was damaged in the same incident so was probably at Kings Cross.

"Micky"

What about Princes Risborough going towards the countryside on the Down, with the Aylesbury branch going off to the right. Would the Down Signal in the Photograph, showing a clear road for the train and the branch signal at danger be correct for the location?
Just a thought but no time at present to look at photographs of locations as that Signal is quite distinctive,
I am supposed to be working for SWMBO in the Garden  Never mind hey!

Folks, just ignore the fool,I have just remembered the Signal Box at Risborough was on the Down side, not on the platform and typically G.W.R.

They will be here from the Home shortly to take me back. :!:

Regards & Apologies.
Del .

PS Gadwall is CORRECT. Honest.

Anyone know what class the GW loco is? I'm guessing one of the lighter weights, a Hall or less.

Funny that you should say that Iron Duke because that thought went through my mind last night, infact taking a closer look at those lower quadrant signals i reckon that they are G.C.R. lower quadrants rather then G.W.R. lower quadrants that i assumed they were so i reckon that the location could well be Wembley Hill.

There was 4 roads basically from Neasden south junction passed Neasden north junction then through Wembley Hill station and beyond as far as Blind Lane s/box where it went into 2 roads towards Sudbury Hill & Harrow Road.

That looks like a G.W.R. Hall heading towards or away from Marylebone then?.
Hello all :
First photo DEFINITELY Wembley Hill (all signals pictured were still in exactly the same form in about 1970 when I was with the S&T gang sent there to participate in removing equipment from the just-abolished signal box) :
The photographer was on the Down platform (no platforms on the centre 'through' lines), so 6139(9?) is on the Down Passenger Independent line, and the GW loco on the UPI line, signalled to cross to the Up Main.
