Mayflower, Grosmont to Washwood Heath M C (13-05-13)

Hi,

Having spent just over a week at the NYMR, B1 61306, now makes its way to Washwood Heath M C,
here passing through Sth Yorkshire.

Great piccies as always, Trev. I wouldn't have thought apple green would suit a B1 but it does. Most handsomely!

Hi BJ,

Hope that you don't mind me hijacking your thread - great pics , as always, by the way.

I was wondering about the significance of the L5 on 61306's front buffer beam; I'm sure someone out there will know.

I'm not sure whether the "HULL" is quite authentic, I would have expected an abbreviation of Botanic Gardens (nitpicking, I know).

It is still a great loco and I am glad that it is in Apple Green, makes a change from the almost ubiquitous BR black these days. I have fond memories of 61306, I was on the last train from Beverley to York which it hauled

I have just looked in one of my old loco shedbooks, it says Mayflower was at 40B Immingham/Grimsby/ New Holland, while 61306 was at 52B Heaton. That was in 1957, so suppose they could have moved around a bit.

I have just looked in one of my old loco shedbooks, it says Mayflower was at 40B Immingham/Grimsby/ New Holland, while 61306 was at 52B Heaton. That was in 1957, so suppose they could have moved around a bit.

BJ, you have fallen into re-naming trap. The loco originally named Mayflower was not 61306 but 61379 and according to Yeadon it was first allocated to Colwick & then Immingham. However when 61306 was bought out of preservation, the owner(s) chose to give it the Mayflower name.

61306 was delivered new (1/4/1948) to Hull Botanic Gardens shed, which supplied most of the Hull passenger locos; when that shed closed to steam it was moved to Hull Dairycoates. For the last few months of its BR working life it was moved to Bradford (Low Moor).

Solario, I didn't fall into the trap I just was not specific enough, also I made a mistake with the shed code, sorry, I put 52B instead of 53B, eyes not what they used to be, like I said, the shed allocations were correct according to the shed book in 1957. So 61379 was at 40B & 61306 was at 53B, did see both of these in the fifties.

Good to see 1306 restored and back in livery. As an ex Botanic man, I have fired her many times as with the other 4 B1's at the shed.
I don't want to inject a too sour note in this thread but I cannot, in honesty, as a footplate man, give a thumbs up to the B1 as a class.
Even from new, the ride was dreadful and made worse by the noise.
Don't get me wrong, the more locos in steam from whatever region, the happier I am it's just that I would have sooner had a B16 to ride on than a B1.

Thats how they were delivered to 39B when I started 3.3.47 as a cleaner but without the 6 in front.

Run in at Gorton then to Darnall only a few weeks old
