I see you managed to catch the Ivatt in the ballast.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

Nothing conclusive Blackout but rumour mill has suggested catch points or spreading at a set of points.

Looks like the Trap points did what they were meant to.Blackout60800 wrote:Any reports as to what caused the derailment?
Comment under Show More may absolve the crew partially.

So we have a train standing at signals and the driver just decides to go! The collision in Norfolk occurred when the driver of the Britannia decided to go off shed with a mogul standing a few yards in front. Most SPDs on the real railway at least have the excuse that the driver couldn't STOP at the signal. Hope I'm not around when these drivers are driving home. Or their firemen.......P.S. I wonder if anyone else has noticed that, on the GCR, the locos always seem to run back to Lo'bro on the last train of the day with the S.V. blowing off furiously? Wasting of coal, wearing the boiler, abrading the safety valve seats. Words now fail me - or at least charitable and non libellous ones.

Check the comments that I mentioned in my earlier post.1H was 2E wrote:So we have a train standing at signals and the driver just decides to go!
It is possible that the crew had been given authorisation to pass the signal at danger.
Possibly confirmed by the long whistle immediately before moving.

Somehow missed this thread, only heard about the incident last night in the pub (yes, in North Texas!).
The story I'm hearing is that the signalman couldn't clear the signal and gave verbal clearance.
I have no idea how the signals, main point, and catch point are all interlocked at this point; but this means both the signalman and the driver assumed the catch point were set correctly. I'm reminded of FAA investigations where a plane crash never has a single cause, but a long chain of events must have all happened for the crash to occur. Even though we don't know the details yet and only have rumours to go on, it sounds like the same is true here.
