North Eastern Railway badges

Hi all, i've seen in the past the Gomm reproduction brass cap badges for the North Eastern Railway, an oval shape with a side view of an A class 2-4-2T (LNER F8), with writing at the top "NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY" and below "GATESHEAD. LOCO DEPT. DARLINGTON"

Does anyone know if these are based on originals?

I'm looking for two or more, but haven't spotted any in museums for a while, does anyone know of any shops currently selling them?

I have seen or heard of most NER railwayana and I have never seen anything "real" like that. I guess the NRM would confirm or deny this? BTW the "holy grail" for an NER collector would be an "NER Lookout" enamel armband which for some reason doesn't seem to exist.

Pinza one of the members of my facebook group found an NBR enamelled lookout badge in fair condition while walking the Reston Duns section of the Berwickshire Railway.

I have one somewhere but where is the question.

I bought it at the Strathspey Rly's shop, Boat of Garten in 1979.

Are they valuable perhaps on a par with a Penny Black? Can I now retire a rich man? Sensible answers on the back of a used tea bag.

Penny Blacks aren't rare. I had two at one time...

(I think there are estimated to be about half a million surviving, out of ~60million printed)

NBR Lookout enamel armbands are uncommon but not unknown. Most companies have been seen but NEVER an NER. It is so unheard of that (no offence) I would have to see a photo before I believed it. BTW I used to have an NER Pilotman cloth armband but that is not on the same scale.

Thanks all - I know the similar ones for other companies are based on originals, although the reproduction ones are slightly modified to feature preserved locomotives (i've got what I think is an original SECR one that features a 4-4-0, but the reproduction ones feature preserved C Class 592 based at the Bluebell)

Railwayana wise it turns out i've got five of the WW1 NER armbands and two of the round enamel WW1 lapel badges which are very nice. Would love to collect other bits as and when I can, there was a superb NER handlamp on ebay but got outbid when it got to about £180!

Most railwayana on ebay tends to be overpriced junk or inaccurately described. There are a number of the "GWR candle lamps" http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksi ... &_from=R40
which are well known forgeries, and if you read the descriptions some are carefully worded so as to avoid being done for selling bogus items.
