Good morning all
A quick look at the green book shows that:
the first twenty six O2's had GN tenders,
the next twelve O2's had stepped out coping GS tenders,
the next four O2's had flush sided GS tenders,
and the last twenty five (built 1942/2) had ex-D49 tenders, some stepped out and some flush.
So if you model pre-war LNER, there are only four O2's with flush tenders, and sixteen with side windowed cab.
Later some of the twenty six built with GN type cab later had new cabs with side windows, but kept the GN tender.
Twelve of the original O2's with GN cab and GN tender were rebuilt to O2/4 keeping the GN tender, and eighteen of the O2/3's with side window cab and GS tender were also rebuilt.
So 40% of the O2/4's had GN tenders, yet another reason to provide a ex-GNR tender.

No doubt Heljan will already realise, or will be suitably advised, that if they wish to minimise tooling changes, then a start with the later versions requires caution with respect to the valve gear. If a "correct" long expansion link is fitted, then a a different one will be necessary to make the gear fit under the lower running plate if and when that finally comes. A short expansion link in the first place will allow the valve gear to fit all sub-types.

Goodness me Grahame,that was very much a tongue in cheek remark made in a very jocular way. I am unlikely to be able to offer anything like the expertise of people you already have on board. I do hope your good Lady goes on well and will look forward to seeing you whenever its convenient. I must confess that I have deteriated healthwise myself unfortunately, but that's life I am afraid. I am however following this topic with great interest and feel sure it will be a great success for Heljan.

The excellent thing about these forums is that there is always somebody somewhere to put you right. In my quest to get the best out of the O2/4 tooling I had opted for an LNER liveried version with flush sided tender, believing this to be 3950. I have realised the error of my ways and this should be 2437 (from 1944) or later 3962 (from 1946). Again I apologise for this and if anyone has an image of either of these as an O2/4 then I would be pleased for some guidance.
Hopefully I've got it correct this time.........all these boilers..........tenders...........re-numbering!!!!

Hope I'm not rivet counting, but providing useful information.
According to my books, 2437 was rebuilt in O2/4 in May 1944, and rebuilt, as 3962, back to O2/3 in Jan 1950.
Its like a minefield choosing numbers.

Maybe Heljan ought to seriously consider producing all O2 variants without numbers, and then we can add them once we have decided on which would be correct for the year that we are modelling?

I've been suggesting this for years. Be particularly useful for Diesels, different number each side and everyone will think you've twice as many locos as you really have.
I mentioned this on a Model Railway forum site and two posters, both in the model trade, said it had been tried a long while ago but it wasn't a success. I still fail to see why!!!

All 02/2 variants ( GN cab and tender! ) - no running numbers as of yet so I've avoided the two LNER versions and bunged in my pre-order at Hattons for the pristine late BR 02/2

I await some further confirmation of these from those "really in the know" as the O2/2 choice, which would certainly suit me miles better than a /3 or /4, is definitely at odds with the news we were given only a few months ago. It seems to me not beyond all possibility that Hattons have scrambled the information, so I won't get too excited yet.
