Re: 5506 location
Beeley Woods near Sheffield on the GCR line from Manchester although I think its probably Wharncliffe Side. Boris on this site may know more than me.
Edit;- The two tracks on the right could be either the start of the branch to British Tissues Oughtibridge or the Branch to Stocksbridge Steelworks.

Re: 5506 location
I'm always find photos of preserved locos 'in service' to be quite fascinating, especially if it's in a livery that the loco hasn't worn for at least 65 years
Anyone know the date of Butler Henderson's valance removal? I always thought it was done by BR

Re: 5506 location
Yes Beely Woods was South of Wadsley Bridge near to Kneepsend power station.
The two track are most likely the power station sidings.
We used to take two trains of coal a day up to the plant from Bernard Road siding with a J50 as the loco, bunker first, the N classes were not strong enough for that trip.
The train in the picture is West bound next staion it will pass will be Wadsley Bridge

Re: 5506 location
This image http://i579.photobucket.com/albums/ss23 ... rson-1.jpg must have been taken between October 1946 and October 1949. The valences had been removed by the time of the photograph but despite the title of the photo this does seem to be BH with the later LNER number of 2660. Given the state of the loco - the leading '2' of '2660' is almost illegible - I suspect this modification must have been done in late LNER days or earlier which would put it outside of the BR era.Blackout60800 wrote:Anyone know the date of Butler Henderson's valance removal? Good man Boris I knew you would have the route knowledge, at least I was near enough but no cigar.
