Both really look the part Graeme. 60503 in particular, but the printed nameplates look almost good enough to use period. Have you considered printing them on transfer paper, to apply onto brass nameplate shapes perhaps?

Here, doing his best not to look like a freshly dipped toffee apple, although struggling on account of today's peculiar determination of my sprayed satin varnish to dry SHINY, is El Presidente himself. A dose of weathering will help in due course:
And with no prospect now of delivery of pukka nameplates in time for cutting out and fitting prior to the weekend, The Board have sanctioned the temporary fitting of some printed substitute plates to GN3:

I do wish AGW would reconsider making the larger bossed LNER 3'2" bogie wheels. Not everyone can wait 6 months for Ultrascale sets.....

The only etched nameplates I currently know of in this style are from Guilplates and come complete with an etched representation of the crest. The very fine crest detail is therefore metal-colour only, and does predictably vary quite noticeably according to the precise point at which the etching process is stopped.
I can easily supply the crest artwork should anybody want to home-print a transfer, IF there is such a thing as an etched GN plate with a blank semi-circular space for a crest.
Somebody will eventually remark on it if I don't, so, I realise I haven't glazed the cab of 503 yet, nor added the front coupling. The cab has a backhead and I will do the rest eventually. It needs seats, reverser, fallplate and doors too, but time is ag'in' us at the moment.

Modelmaster's GN plates are blank with an extra etched semi-circular space for crest. I'll try and dig the camera out later on. Following the Nottingham show I've been doing a little bit of tidying up, and trying to catch up on some overdue resin casting work. I've been able to fit in no actually railway modelling this week, but I have been looking at some drawings. I shall have to get hold of a copy for study myself, but in the meantime does anybody have a good drawing of the A4, such as Isinglass, that they might be kind enough to consult for me? If so, what's the maximum overall width of the boiler clothing in the area of the smokebox please?

*cough* can't make any sense from the offical works drawing. It would appear that when the NRM scanned it, the file ended up bigger than it should be. I'll look in to it and try to recalibrate the drawing

Right'o, I'm not entirely sure which measurement you're after, but it would seem that the true scale for the scanned in works drawing on my laptop is 50.22mm to the foot, giving a full smokebox casing width (along the centerline) of 7' 6'' Someone else can scale it down to 4mm scale, as I'd just mess it up.
I'm afraid that the circumstances surrounding re-production of the works drawing (owned by the NRM) state that I can only use my copy for personal research purposes, thus I can't post or distribute any parts of it.

Ta. Erm... looking at the NRM website I can see that the A4 GA is somewhat crowded with information in the relevant area. I think we may be at cross-purposes here as the width I was expecting was in the region of only 6' 6" or less. The width of the casing in the area in which the nameplates are fitted is another description of what I was trying to establish.

From what I can ascertain the width that Atlantic is looking for is 6'6" according to drawings I have been able to find in my library and archive.

Modelmaster. I think Guilplates and 247's look sharper and better defined, but Modelmaster's 60113 plates do have the crest section separate.

Graeme although I don't have an Isinglass drawing of an A4 I do have one for the streamlined W1. I would think the smokebox would be the same as an A4. Looking down on this in plan view (from above) and using dividers and a steel rule it appears that the maximum width of the smokebox clothing in the line through the centre of the first chimney hole gives 6'3" (25mm). It is not possible to get a dimension from the front view. The smokebox is tapered in the sense that it continues to widen until it reaches the boiler band at the rear of the smokebox. However it is not possible to measure this on the drawing.
For comparison I have measured the smokebox of one of my later Hornby double chimney A4s and this gives a measurement of about 6'7" (26.3mm) at the same place. Not sure where this leaves you?
Interestingly I also have an Isinglass drawing of '3279' which I propose to build one day!

I don't have the Isinglass A4, but I do have the W1, P2, and B17/5. I will check these out and see if the measurements are the same, if so we can guess the A4 is similiar. It will probably be sunday morning before I look at these, as I'm up early to go to Ally pally, and will probably be tired (and drunk)when I get home
I too have the 3279 drawing, as I'd also like to build one at some time.
The only difficulty I can see is the valve gear. I haven't found any similiar rod lengths. The motion bracket is also unique, similiar to a V2, but 90 deg transposed.
It is striking how many of us wish for the same locos. There's obviously three of us who like 3279, with GK and myself liking the Q3 and O1(orig), and everyone seems to like B3 "Valour".
Must get moving
