Joe Brown was born in Lincolnshire not far from where I lived as a boy, but the family moved to London when he was an infant, hence the Cockney accent.

We used to pass close to the hamlet of Swarby on a regular basis when visiting relatives and would have the Joe Brown's birthplace repeated to us by adults each time. That was when he was at the height of his early 60s chart fame.

I recall Joe Brown appearing on the telly programme THIS IS YOUR LIFE about 30 years ago with Eammon Andrews and one of Joe's old driver's turned up on the show saying that when they were 'on shed' Joe would sit up on the bunker (of a B.R.class 4 2-6-4T that were associated with the L.T.& S. line) and play his banjo amongst the smoke & steam!!.

Joe was also asked why he left the railway and he said something like after being a fireman on steam to change to diesel (locos) and just sit there eating your cheese sandwiches was boring!!.

My mother used to sing that constantly, and it drove me mad.

I nearly included 'Little white bull' John (i liked it when i was 10 or 11 years old) but that wasn't a rock & roll song, Tommy recorded that song when he had become an 'around entertainer' in the early/mid 1960s.

You use to hear that song 'Little white bull' a lot on BBC radio one on Saturday mornings back in the late 1960s.

At least no-one's yet mentioned a pink toothbrush or a blue toothbrush!

How's about 'Worker's Playtime' on the Light Programme?

The railway songs used to confuse me ,as a kid.

"The Railroad Runs Through The Middle Of The House" - what? Why would anyone build a railway through a house?

"The Runaway Train" which was even more confusing to my infant mind.

"The runaway train went over the hill, and the last we heard she was going still" - what?

When I was told to sit still, it meant not moving; so how can anything be going and be still at the same time?

"Freight train, freight train, going so fast" - what?

All I ever saw were iron ore and coal trains to Frodingham, and they never seemed to get above 25mph when they passed our house.

And with Lonnie Donegan singing "Rock Island Line", the lyrics were a complete mystery to me, at that age.

I don't remember hearing Last Train To San Fernando much. It was not one of Uncle Mac's requested songs.

Chatanooga Choo Choo had only one mysterious bit for me, and that was the Track 29 business. I could not imagine any railway with 29 tracks, so it was dismissed as not a song to bother with.
