Atlantics 3285 & 4419

Help wanted please with these two pics.
Both damaged by damp stains (and dodgy glue) but I have (hopefully) "improved" with edit tool.
First one no location or date, second just says Grantham.

The photo of 4419 is in the RCTS Green Bible 3A fig 27. Grantham 1932.

C1 3285 was a Grantham loco during the 1930s, when this picture was taken.

Yeadon Register Vol.13 page 41 has a T G Hepburn photo at the same location.

I think it is also Grantham.

4419 was fitted with a booster, was it not? I'd suspect it's to do with that.

Correct Jonathan.

Fitted with booster 1923 to 1935.

It also received a superheater, piston valves and bigger cab in 1923.

G'Day Gents

The pipework on 4419 is for the booster under the cab, the idea was to get a bit more tractive effort out of the loco when starting away from a station.

I agree that the first photo is very likely to be at Grantham. Compare the photo here posted 3 Jan 2012 (third image down, of 64202):

and note the same (or very similar) similar telegraph pole.

Yes, and unless my eyes are deceiving me, isn't that the spire of St Wulfrum's church appearing out of the chimney of the loco behind?

Again from the hundreds of members on this site one or more of you will no doubt come up with something re' the following.

On February 13 1949 I was fireman on the assisiting engine on the night mail from Sheffield to Manchester

We came off at Dinting, used the triange to turn and had our snap standing at the signal waiting to come bacK L.E to Darnall.

I know the date was correct because unfortunatly when I got home I found gran', who had brought me up, dead, and whilst going down the road to phone the doctor, the postman gave me my calling up papers for National Service, so I am pretty sure that was the right date.

Yes all s==t happens at once.

After this the question is, I know the engine was a G.N atlantic and one of the last.

Was it the last because I believe the last G.N Atlantic was shedded at Darnall when she was withdrawn.
It would be interesting to know how long the G.Ner lasted after this.

What started this question off was I was looking at Sheffield Railway auctions and a Smokebox number plate was on sale last year which said it was the last and was at Darnall at the time it was withdrawn

From Yeadon's Register it appears 3 C1s lasted into 1950 at Darnall. Nos. 2817, 2854 and 62885. The last to go was 2817 withdrawn on
8-5-1950 having worked its final train in late April, see RCTS vol 3A.

2817 and 2854 never received their allocated BR numbers.

However the last Atlantic withdrawn was 62822 of Grantham condemned 27-11-1950.
