Can you identyfy this location ?
These three individual photographs show 1) LNER A1 2573 ? 2) an ex-NER B16/1 and 3) an ex-NER D20/1. I think that they were all taken on the same day at the same location - but where ?
My own investigations lead me to believe that they were taken between October 1924 and April 1928, but where ?

Ay up!
By the looks of things, I'd say Dringhouses, just south of York.

The A1 in the top picture cannot be 2573.
The number is on the cabside, so the date is post May 1928. No. 2573 was already an A3 by that date.
Could be 2572.

I don't think it's Dringhouses, the houses in the photo's are council houses by their design and those in Dringhouses that back onto the railway in Swale and Don Ave don't have rendered first floors, the council houses in Gower and Eason Rd are semi detached. Further down towards Holgate they are private houses and are not of the type shown in the pics.

Something said 'Darlington' to me, but I haven't any photos to hand to confirm that.

Re: Can you identyfy this location ?
Hello and many thanks for your comments. However, I must point out that I believe the first photo to be of a Gresley A1 - this loco is not sporting the coverplates, fitted to both sides of the smokebox, in order to accomodate the protrusion of the large forty-three element superheater header, of the 220lb/sq in boiler, used for the A3's. Also there are many photographs of Gresley A1's carrying their respective number on the cab side, rather than on the tender, which would cause a problem if the tender was changed.
I would also say that, prior to trying to positively identify the location, I always thought that they were taken somewhere between Selby and York; Barlby, Riccall, Eskrick, or the run into York itself - but I cannot match them with any of these locations.
Again thanks for your opinions.

Re: Can you identyfy this location ?
Has anybody questioned the fact that it is an A1?

Sorry, a missunderstanding in the text - the more I look at the detail the number is 25.. almost certainly 7 and really looks like a 3....but...
