London Underground 150th Anniversary - Metropolitan No 1
Hey,
I've got a video filming the special train for the London Underground's 150th anniversary at Barbican station.
I'll be one to say that both Met No 1 and Sarah Siddons both look fantastic.

I was on it tonight! What an event! Moorgate to Edgware Road and back in one (412) of the "Ashbury" coaches behind vintage Met traction was probably one of the firmest things I have ever done. I lingered on a seat at Baker Street later to see it come through and it was some sight.
I thought the organisation of the whole event was first class.
P.s. well done with the shots. With a normal service running as well and the amount of people about, you did very well.

I know todays media have got to 'hype everything up' which is fair enough but to say that steam on the London Underground finished over 100 years ago is totally misleading the general public wot about the dozen or so ex-GWR pannier tanks that were working on engineering trains up to mid-1971?.
I presume it wouldn't sound as dramatic to say that steam on the London Underground only finished as recently as 1971.

Would have loved to have seen it or even had a ride on it, proved too costly however for me.

What a wonderful sight. Met No 1 is a lovely little engine and I love that deep toned whistle.

Might it be correct to say that LT ran its last steam passenger trains 100 years ago?

the Royal Mint are doing £2 coins for the LU 150th , not in circulation , in collectors wallets priced from 50 upover (( ))

In 1989, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Metropolitan to Chesham, the first Steam on the Met event took place, with London Underground running two weekends of steam specials between Chesham and Watford. The event was a success and so in 1990, London Underground decided to run steam between Harrow and Amersham. In 1992, to celebrate 100 years of the Met at Amersham, the event was extended to five days at the end of May. In 1995, it was decided to run trains between Amersham and Watford.
Engines used in the event included BR standard class 4 tank, BR standard class 5, and GWR Pannier tanks. There were also various other rolling stock used as static displays at Rickmansworth sidings. The steam trains ran in between normal timetabled Metropolitan and main line services. Due to the imminent partial privatisation of LUL and the stock condition, the last steam excursion took place in 2000. In 2008, special trains ran on the Met using Metropolitan Railway electric locomotive "Sarah Siddons" and diesel Class 20 locomotives"
Oh yes steam DEFINATELY hadn't returned to the Underground for over 100 years.

there is a number of videos on you tube ,lots of steam but could see any smoke,what did they use as fuel,coal/coke/or some other type of smokeless fuel.?????

When I got to Waterloo on Monday morning there was a definite whiff of steam locomotive coming up from the Tube.

It smelt like good old steam coal to me. There was quite a bit of smoke when I saw it come through Baker Street but they weren't overdoing it as service trains were still going through on the other line.

The London Undeground use to be fairly interesting up to about the 1970s a fair bit of older tube stock still knocking around the Underground system back then but like everything else around nowadays it ain't like it use to be.
