G'Day Gents

As you say, there's not a lot of difference between the B17's, the valve gear being the exception, that alone would make a huge improvement, may try for a 'Sandy' one day, do like those small GE tenders, (thinks out loud) wonder if it's possible to motorize a GE tender :shock:

Hornby released the B17 in the Chinese era still with the tender driver but 5 pole motor and more pickups. Did it have better quality handrails, valve gear and other castings, or was that unchanged? The lining and wheels were much finer that I do remember. I've got an LNER Norwich United somewhere boxed away from about 10ish years ago. It hardly seems worth replacing it as the body is so good dimetionally, and if the handrails are better then thats even more reason to keep hold of it.

With reference to motorising the B12 tender for use behind a tender drive B17. This has been done using the Patriot tender drive.

To bring the ride height closer to current practice add a piece of 60th plasticard to the base of the B12 tender body and remove 1.5mm from the top of the tender frame. The cosmetic springs will need replacing with scribed pieces of plasicard.

Just because I happened to feel like it, I decided today to fit in another bit of work before I turn attention in the new year to another A1/1 conversion that I've promised to do. I've decided that it might after all be quite nice to make at least a reasonable job of finishing off that "demonstration" A2/2 body that I put together in basic form a few months ago. It can then play "musical chairs" for the time being, along with Steady Aim's body, and the A2/3 chassis that I created for myself. As soon as I can, without delaying my customer's loco, I also intend to do an A2/1 body by the same means. That will involve having to alter another chassis. Just for a change I might put that one in LNER green with a six-wheeled tender behind the cab.

Here's the A2/2 body after removal of remaining A1/A3 features, smoothing down, first attempts to fill joints, and a revealing coat or primer applied. There's inevitably some more filling to do now that I can see what's what against a plain, pale background colour, but it looks like I shall have a "canvas" that is good enough to look respectable once it gets the details added and a livery applied.

Here, with (minimal) flash cleaned off and some red primer applied are some views of those new A4 chimneys that I mentioned over in the classifieds section:

The A2/1 conversion will be interesting. Tim on RM Web has one on the go too (no pictures so far).

Regarding the A2/1 Graeme, I would be very interested to know if your current thinking is still along the following lines:

Bachmann A2 chassis;
Hornby A1/3 Margate body;
Resin & etched parts (as supplied to me recently);
Bachmann V2 tender.

I have a Hornby China Doncaster A1 body - would this be an acceptable alternative to the Margate body?

Finally I find the Group Standard tenders somewhat confusing. I believe that in terms of RTR models, these can be found behind the Bachmann V2, K3, J39 and B1, as well as Hornby's B1, but there are differences. Do you have any thoughts as to which would be best please?

Jim
You can also use presuming LNER period

A4 Non corridor tender on 507 Highland Chieftain but will need electric lighting added

A2 Tender on 509 Waverley.

A easy repaint too as all A2/1 were Black in LNER days :!:

I also agree re six wheelers Tenders info is scarce re the various diagrams

Happy new year to all
