There is no doubt that availability increased with optical frame alignment, but talk to anybody who was there, like Harry Knox for example and they will tell you that there were always the stars and the dogs.
The same applies with any machinery. I've had two virtually identical cars, one was a great performer and the previous one, identical in specification, was less than perfect!

Re: Dogs post nationalisation
Poor wording on my behalf, but I kept it short so as to avoid letting myself tattle on about 60103's preservation life

Well if ACB is doing the report on 60103 it will be interesting reading as, in my experience of his reports in his time at 34G, it will be straight and to the point.
I have copies of some of the daily "fitness to run" sheets for steamers examined at Southall/Didcot in the late 1980's and early 1990's in my loft and, from what I remember at the time, some of the ones for 4472/60103 were, how shall I put it, more "interesting" than the other locos. I must reaquaint myself with them when the report comes out.
Why have I got them? I was the Area Finance Manager there and we were supposed to charge each owner for the daily exam but I didn't! This was because I needed the Charter Train Unit workload at the Oak to stay there and so, as we were both old school railwaymen, the Charter Train Unit Finance Manager and I "came to an understanding". He effectively paid for the time Of Inspector Bob Judge through my overhead mark up on the coaching stock maintenance.
