Good morning all
The conversion to a U1 sounds a lovely idea, but like many ideas a lot of unrealised difficulties arise. The wheelbase is shorter, and the motor cannot drive on the two rear axles as pointed out by Atlantic. Another problem would be daylight under the tanks. I built the DJH U1 a while ago and built it with two motors driving on the second axle, but had to lose the daylight under the tanks. This did not matter to me as I build models for myself. However, I do not think it would be accepted by a R-T-R producer. The conversion to a P1 looks a much better proposition, there are several variants to consider; with or without booster, and A1 or A3 boiler etc. The tender can be converted from a GNR coal rail tender with a new chassis and modded coal plates in place of the coalrails.
I welcome the production of an O2, I hope it is sold with different cabs and tenders. I like how the eight coupled freights are multiplying.

Although I must say that I quite like the idea of the word "hypothecated". It might imply the existence of such a person as a hypothecary, one you might approach when in need of a hypothesis, possibly for medicinal purposes.

Well. I am not, nor ever was, an hypothecary. But hypothecation, as a concept, DOES exist, as the denizens of HM Treasury would recognise all too well. It describes the pre-destination of a particular tax so that its yield is devoted to a specific purpose. An example would be if Vehicle Excise Duty (VED - "motor tax" to ordinary humans) were to be devoted purely to the upkeep and construction of roads, or possibly, going back to the seventeenth century, the allocation of the coal tax to the funding of the City churches. Hypothecation is something which HMT has resolutely set its face against during living memory.

I think this might just be going off the point a bit.... So. In case of any doubt, I too think Heljan's projected production of the O2 is an excellent idea, to be afforded all reasonable support. And where, Mr Hattons, is my Hornby O1 lurking.....? (My current attempts at resuscitating a pre-Bachmann clumsy hack of a V2 are dragging their feet a bit whilst I await an hypothecated set of Comet valve-gear, so I could use an injection of something to gaze at in wonder, love and admiration with no intent to wield the hatchet.)

My local model shop seems to have had at least one O1 for sale, but now they are 'out of stock'. I presume that they had enough to fulfil pre-orders and they possibly had a cancelled order or two, hence the sudden appearance and then disappearance of any stock.

I tend not to pre-order, because I lose track of what I have ordered. Mind you, a wait until 2013 will not do the bank account any harm, and once the novelty wears off there may be some discounted slow sellers (LNER liveried I'm afraid) just as happened with the O4. A quick change of identity and "Bobs yer uncle".

Given the state of my bank balance, I reckon my uncle Bob is achieving several thousands of rpm in his grave...

I jigged up an O1 about 5 years ago Chassis a spare 8F, body an old B1

Save a duplicate of the file, open the duplicate in microsoft paint, click resize (on the upper tab) and choose the image size percentage. Get it low enough to allow it to be posted and voila :)

There's a black and white pic of GNR 461 in the February edition of MR, out today. Heljan say with there being different boilers, cabs, tenders, running plates, domes, chimneys, bufferbeams etc, it's their intention to recreate a number of different models. The final choice will be released later.

In GNR Grey hoping if not then it will have to be DIY job
I know that they were painted grey during the Great war did they remain like this?

Or were they in any other GNR Livery Black or apple green?


Also is this Heljans first Steamer? making a change from diesels. Anyway I applaud them for taking this on!

Grey or fully lined green; I don't think they went into black until LNER days. As the Grouping was not long after the end of WW1, some at least must have been in grey when repainted in LNER Black.

They've done a number of Scandinavian locos, including (at an eye-watering price) a splendid Swedish/Danish F class pacific. I was very tempted by one of these some years ago, but decided that the UK balance of exports against imports probably couldn't handle the pressure.

And, of course, there's the elemess Garratt for the box-shifters.

This is Heljan's first UK steam locomotive for general release but they have just done the LMS Beyer-Garratt as a commission for Hatton's.
