Nice photos, especially the first one with the signals - but everything is so clean! Is there any reason for having a break van at both ends other than having them on show?

I agree re the cleanliness - a clean Q6? Might have seen no more than half a dozen in the course of a year. Re the brake van at each end, my guess, and it's no more than that, is it saves having to run it round at the end of the trip.

You are 100% correct. In fact, if a goods train was to reverse direction, then it would have a brake at each end anyway.

I have always thought that it would be more effective if the preservationists craned metal crates full of rocks into their mineral wagons, just to give a decent load for the locos to pull.
I am amazed at the restoration that has taken place, but the loads behind the engine on demonstration goods trains make the whole scenario look unreal to someone who remembers slow moving mineral trains, with wagon buffers clanking when starting and stopping and a lot of effort from the loco up front.
My favourite preservation freight events have to be those of the Cranmore 150 Gala, at Merehead Quarry. If you have not seen the action, then a quick search for "9F Merehead 2008" ought to bring up several scenes such as this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDapZQpJk7Q

I think the word here gentleman is demonstration, there are no earnings from a demo goods train. So why should more pressure but put on the loco for nothing, basically. Just think if you owned that loco.

I really enjoyed that video. I fast forwarded it several times but the loco doesn't seem to be getting any closer. Just read in a magazine, that particular engine is up for sale, so if you have any savings you might be interested. I suppose you also know that it holds the record for the heaviest freight train in Britain pulling 2198 tonnes.

According to the Mag, after 45 yrs with the loco and at an age of 81. He thinks it is time to sell his prized possession to someone perhaps younger who can give it the care it deserves. In 18 months time it is due for its 10yr overhaul, as that would put Mr Shepherd in his mid eighties when completed, he thinks the time is right.
