NER 4-4-0 query

I'd be interested to know anything about the loco and carriage in the picture at http://picturestocktonarchive.wordpress ... uct-c1900/

The notes below the picture are not conclusive (at the time of writing). To my eye, the loco. does not exactly resemble any of the pictures of NER 4-4-0s in the 'Locomotives' section here.

D17 (NER M) or D22 (NER D/F/F1), I'd have said. Certainly pre- or shortly after 1923. I'd agree about the coach possibly being a saloon of some sort as well.

Colouring of the splashers appears to be a different shade

Ay up!

This engine has no cast numberplate. Didn't NER engines carry these? Also there is damage to the front end like a shunting mishap.

Yes, should have a large cabside plate. Should also have a visible curve on the cab side where the splasher comes down to footplate level. Wonder if the photo has been touched up?

Also, i've slightly modified the title from 'Atlantic' to '4-4-0'

Possible it's on test from Works and not completely painted/decorated? It looks as if there's a section of valance missing above the leading driver as well.

There are indications of "touching in" to enhance the sky to a white rather than grey,possibly on the original negative. The original grey in the sky can be seen above the tender rear,this retouching would account for the strange appearance around the front buffers and smokebox.Such touching in occurred on many photo post cards of that era.The splasher area mismatch is odd - I wonder if the loco had a side swipe,and was still in undercoat after repair.

The number plate is there, just lost in the noise of the bad print. The coach is an ordinary clerestory brake.

I agree with Bill that the coach is an ordinary NER clerestory van/brake, with four windows in the end.
