Bryan: re. mining: Sounds back to front, as it is usually described as a potash mine? If you wanted halite salt, then there are easier places to find it.

I never took the chance of a trip down Boulby - when I was a member of the PESGB (Petroleum Exploration Society of GB) they had annual field trips ("Feel the Geothermal Gradient") but spaces were always limited. However I do know they mine sacrificial tunnels to 'absorb' some of the pressure.

Also, on geological timescales, halite salt does flow. It is also buoyant. This is how salt domes form. A real pain for the geophysicists and oil drillers, but very tempting as they can form good oil traps.

Rock spoil dumping makes sense, but I would think they would have trouble dumping the various evaporites (salts) as they could influence the local sea chemistry and ecology (under the right conditions dilution might be sufficient?) - but those are also worth money. So perhaps the rock spoil is simply from neighbouring tunnels, and possibly thin layers between the salts.

Yes pumps, and quite high abrasion wearing out the pipe and pumps, so therefore high maintenance and running costs; but the company obviously think that it is still preferable to rail transport. Maybe it is a matter of capacity.

Chalk was sent by pipeline from Totternhoe to Rugby with problems..

But Sirius have said they are also investigating methods of dry transport for Potash , so can this only be road or rail ?

Slightly off topic but K4 the Great Marquess will be travelling the full Boulby line tomorrow (Sat) leaving Middlesbrough at 11.41 am

Would that be Redcar Central, with St Peters on the skyline? Its been some time since I was last there, but used to jump off at Redcar East on my way home.

Yes its sunny Redcar, St Peters church only became visable from this point since the goods shed was demolished to make way for Regent arcade and Morrisons shopping centre. For those that dont know , the goods shed was almost same building , even in size as the train shed in the picture - now a small business centre.

very nice Seacoaler, tip I was given from the late Ivo Peters , " camera still-let the sbject do the moving", my stills are taken from the movie of the same train.

Thanks Mr B , first time i've used film function on my little camera so was quite pleased with results . Other thing to remember is not to talk while filming !

hi seacoaler - will try and post video in Darlington Saltburn thread.
I also find to-days compacts often take 'movies' as good as expensive camcorders, mine gets used more than the DVD / hard drive camcorder.
