Long gone factory

Post by hq1hitchin »

This is the rather splendidly titled 'English and Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Societies Cocoa and Chocolate Works' in 1921. The factory was on the GN section, west of Luton Bute St. Not sure when it shut but it was still going in 1960. Note the Ivatt C12 tankie and I reckon that's Luton West box down on the left.

The factory at the start of this thread might be long gone. But on two Aerofilms photos from the same website, from 1926 and 1929, I can clearly see my joiners workshop. I believe it was a joiners shop back then too.

Sawdust.

PS rice one TRESTROL!

Pilau in 1962, the factory is behind the old box. Name board on signalbox must be a wrong spelling!

Funnily enough i was in Pelaw relay room this week. Up until about 5 years ago it was still the old new signal box with the "greenhouse" removed. The building was riddled with asbestos so the powers that be decided to build a new relay room building around the old building. Then demolish the old building inside and keep the old relay racks in situ. So they now have a nice new relay room about the size of a 5 a side pitch. Pity nobody looked to see haw much equiptment inside was actually in use as at least half the relay racks are now redundant so with a bit of tinkering it would all have fitted in a building at most a third of the size.

That used to be my local station. First time I've seen it photographed that way. Also learned something as I thought the old signal box was removed earlier. Learn something new every day!
