Hi, I have a block instrument for a "DOWN LINE", along the bottom of the case it is marked LNER 356.
What does the 356 stand for, is it for the location of the signal box, and if so how do you find out which box was 356?

I can't say that you're theory is wrong, but I have never heard of numbers meaning that.Martin wrote:Hi, I have a block instrument for a "DOWN LINE", along the bottom of the case it is marked LNER 356.

I would say more likely to be an identity number for that specific instrument, for repir/renovation/record keeping purposes.

Re: Signal Boxes
... or if not that, the stamped number could be to identify a specific instrument type - not just a 'model No.' that might be an instrument which is identifiable from its visible exterior, but a particular version : - There will have been many instances of particular types of instrument which may look the same as each other but have internal differences (e.g., wiring) for reasons to suit the circumstances and/or location in which they were used; like additional safety controls; the instrumentation they were working with in the Box at the other end of the section/s.Micky wrote:Yes it sounds like an 'identity number' stamped on at the workshop/factory where the instrument was originally made for the purposes as stated by Stevie.StevieG wrote:I can't say that you're theory is wrong, but I have never heard of numbers meaning that.Martin wrote:Hi, I have a block instrument for a "DOWN LINE", along the bottom of the case it is marked LNER 356.

Re: Signal Boxes
Thanks for the replies, I take it that means that the number can't link the instrument to any particular box, or even region.
I would of liked to find out some more about it.
Thank you all again

Re: Signal Boxes
If you post a photo of the instrument we will almost certainly be able to give a likely region.

OK - will get a photo next time home and post it, thanks
