NER / LNER Reference Documents

Hi everyone,

I've been working through scanning my collection of reference documents (sectional appendices, operating notices, etc) and thought I'd share this. There are several of interest to the NER / LNER historian. These documents are available through the Document Library link on my website, http://www.limitofshunt.org.uk. I have several more waiting to be uploaded, including Opening Hours of Signal Boxes, and the LNER 1931 North Eastern Area appendix - updates will be announced through Twitter (https://twitter.com/@limitofshunt). Please feel free to have a look, share with anyone else who might be interested, and use these documents as you see fit. Hope this is of some use!

Excellent had a quick glance through.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

Many thanks from me too for hosting this material - the NER 1922/LNER 1947 sectional Appendixes have already proved useful. I look forward to seeing more updates and finding more useful morsels to amaze.

I may be rather thick at finding things on websites, but there is listed an ER freight train loads book for 1967 in the document index, which is of interest to me, but I cant seem to find the link to the scan of it.

Is it there somewhere?

Ive just been looking through the NER sectional appendix for 1921 for items of local interest to myself and noted that a driver would get the staff for the Tweedmouth Dock Branch from the Tweedmouth Goods Foreman rather than a signalman how common was this practice as i noted one or two other instances in the NER area where a similar thing occured.
How about other constituents in the LNER group was this widespread, ive never heard of a staff being handed over by anyone other than a signalman.

Not all the documents listed in the numerical index are on the site; indeed I don't have access to all of those as some kind people have contributed their lists of reference numbers - however I think I might have something like a freight train loads book in the pile of things to scan so there may be something helpful appears in the near future...!

Yes this was quite common at locations where the branch entrance was remote from a signalbox, this lasted until the Dock branch closed. Newcastle Quayside branch was another worked in the same way.

Phewph, glad you came up with an answer. I was assuming it was a piece of sanctioned pragmatism due to the positioning of the box etc; I was all set to dig up a rulebook and check through.

Another branch on Tyneside was worked by this method. One day the train crew reported the loss of the staff to the supervisor, he said oh not to worry I have a spare here. I leave you to ponder why this was not strictly in accordance with regulations!
