Cor - beautiful that!

Thanks for sharing Blackout. They've done a fantastic job there. Such a shame only the two were preserved.

It is a shame, and I'm actually not sure I've ever seen either. Was Mayflower at Doncaster 150?

(i'll point out for copyright etc that neither the photo or video are mine)

Saint Johnstoun wrote:Yes, this loco (61306) left NBL in April 1948 and was new in apple green with BRITISH RAILWAYS on the tender. Same with 61292 was new in the livery I have modelled her.

Is it not ironic that so much accuracy goes into the livery, but the loco still carries a name that it never had in service?

In a similar vein to one of BBs sayings its my railway and i'll run what i like. The owners saved the loco and probably poured many thousands into restoration so dont begrudge them a naming foible, at leasts its a name from an extinct class member not something like Hogwarts Castle.

The original Mayflower was 61379 which was not built until June 1951 therefore never carried LNER livery. It was named as a symbol of the binding of the two towns of Boston in Lincolnshire, and Boston, Mass. on 13th July 1951, the connection being that the Mayflower sailed from Plymouth on 6th September 1620 carrying a number of people from Boston Lincs.

The use of the locomotive 61379 on a charter working to Boston on 4th October 1959 was actually undertaken by 61179 suitably renamed and renumbered due to 61379 running hot.

So 1306 is the third loco to carry the name, which did not fit into the normal pattern of B1 namings so one could give the excuse that keeping the tradition of the first naming alive is justification for 1306 carrying the name today.

...and the engine also bore a plaque in the cab commemorating this fact.

As the LNER did when the original 'Claud Hamilton' was scrapped.

There was another precedent. 1671 was renamed from Manchester City to Royal Sovereign in February 1946 but on withdrawal in September 1958 the nameplates were transferred to 61632 Belvoir Castle. It only lasted until February 1959 though!
