There was something in yesterday's Dallas Morning News, although I forgot about it and didn't look into it further.

Bad indeed Mr B. Spare a though for the families of the three UPR train crew who were killed in this head on collision. For some reason one of the trains should have been switched into a loop, clearing the road for the other.

Theres a great scene in the 1973 movie EMPEROR OF THE NORTH starring Lee Marvin & Ernest Borgnine where 2 steam hauled trains race head on on a single line in thick fog!!.

A steam hauled freight train goes 'flat out' to reach a refuge siding to get in clear of the single line just seconds before a fast mail train comes tearing out of the fog and passes it in the refuge siding!!.

All very dramatic stuff (it really is) but it does leave you wondering is this how American railroads normally operate??.

Huge distances are single-line working in North America (the 170 miles between the two major cities in Alberta, Edmonton and Calgary, a busy freight route, for one example). I know that, operated properly, it's a safe enough system but, sadly, the possibility always exists that a tragedy can occur.
