WD 2-8-0 shedded at Malton

Post by thc »

During the Winter of 1952/1953, a WD 2-8-0 was shedded at Malton. It worked local freights along the Gilling branch but it could not be turned at Malton. It did not last long because crews did not enjoy tender-first working: apparently it was difficult to obtain a piece of tarpaulin that was large enough to cover the tender/cab space. Does anyone have pictures/ recollections af this?

Thanks for that correction! I assume that you found this in Trains Illustrated [or maybe RM]?

According to Ken Hoole in his book "Forgotten Railways North East England" WD 2-8-0's were trialled on limestone trains from Burdale to Thirsk, and Wikipedia says they were used at Malton during WW2 but there's no confirmation of this and certainly no photo of a WD on the M&DR.

FYI I haven't loaded allocations for 1948-1950 completely yet - a job for this summer.
