G'Day Gents
In the picture above, you can see the hand hold (ER style) but they didn't come into use until the mid 50's. And here's a pic of 'Britannia' in 1951 !!! All the photos I've seen of Britannia, she had a normal handrail, any ideas !!

Re: Britannia
Ay up!
The date on the picture is from the 1970s and is the re-dedication of Brittania at (I believe) the Servern Valley Railway, not the original naming at Marylebone.
Doubtless someone will have access to the appropriate RCTS volume? I, sadly, haven't but suspect that the handrails would have modified in the mid-late '50s.

Yes...all the GW and GE Brits had their differing styles of deflector changes made quite rapidly following the Milton derailment conclusion...Blink Bonny wrote:... but suspect that the handrails would have modified in the mid-late '50s.

Yes, had it confirmed the pic of Mr Riddles was taken on the SVR.
Here's a nice shot of 70000 at Sheffield Vic with no handrails. Don't know the date I'm afraid.

Probably 1958 or 1959. Look at all those maroon coaches with the single carmine and cream example in decent nick.

Re: Britannia
Well, in that case I will disagree.
I dont think it is 1958, because 70000 was a Stratford loco then, and the shed plate is a definite Norwich where it was sent at the end of Jan 1959.
The critical thing is the white plate low down on the smoke deflector just in front of the l/h (as we view it) cylinder. If that is one of those electrification warning jobbies, (so beloved of model manufacturers and which are a devil of a job to remove properly without leaving an undesired mark - sorry O/T rant over),
then it is likely to be late 1960 or even early 1961, as these were not fitted in 1959.
It may be a white plate of a different kind, I dont know. But I do know that it is an excellent photo.
However, the only thing that worries me is the lack of a second lamp over the r/h buffer. Would the boat train loco not have had the express passenger headlamps installed as it took over the train from an electric at Victoria?
At that moment it would seem to be about to depart as a class J goods service.

Unless she's just backed on and the class 1 lamps have yet to be set up?
Didn't know about the wire flash date, BTW. Thanks SS.

Re: Britannia
I'm not too sure when the first steam locos were fitted with the ohe flashes BB, but I suspect that it was around the time of the completion of the Manchester - Crewe wiring, which was September 1960.
Someone may know precise details, but not all steam locos had them straight away. It was later in 1961 that they all seemed to have them.
It is quite a good way of attributing a vague date to certain photos, but is not very accurate I'm afraid.

There looks to be a rather mucky maroon Gresley teak corridor on the other line if it helps

G'Day Gents
Well Gents, that puts the cat among the pigeons, Thats the only picture I've ever seen of Brittania, with ER handrail cutouts, which to me means all of the Tri-Ang/ Hornby models are wrong !!!!! must have changed the deflectors over when she was preserved......
Good picture, though.

Re: Britannia
Thanks StevieG.
It is a shame because it is a very nice colour shot by Robin Barbour, of 70000 passing Hawick in the 1960s on a fitted freight.
However, all may not be lost because the photo is still on the Disused Stations website under Hawick (2nd site) at
http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/h/hawick/index.shtml
But you will have to scroll about 3/4 of the way down the page to reach it.
The 'weathering' on the nearside cylinder casing is not one that I would dare attempt on my model.
