Thanks for tip re wheel centre colour .I was just about to ask if Precision LNER teak was the correct colour for LNER wheels sets or is this just to match the Hornby colour version on their coaches ?

Re: Daves C & W Works
The Humbrol 62 is a very good match to both the Hornby solebar colour and an original paint sample so should be ideal for the wheel centres.mick b wrote:Mike

I would say that the Humbrol shade is closer than Precision P60 LNER Coach Teak.

Thanks for info
Re: Daves C & W Works
Thought I would put my money where my mouth is and try using 50mm wide Micropore to simulate roof canvas:
Hmm, too hairy. Not the look I was after.
Next up Masking Tape:
Better. But is it worth the effort and what is the long term likelihood of the tape staying stuck (it can also be difficult the smooth over the domed ends)? Jury is still out on that one!

Re: Daves C & W Works
The LNERCA sample! That would be a sample of Bitumastic paint that I mixed by eye to match the solebars of 1299 and 24109 where the later black bitumen bubbled off the brown. This was achieved by mixing 5L tins of red, green (with a splash of yellow) Bitumastic paint. The solebar bar brown is not suitable for use on the bodies though as it stands out too much against the teak. I think these days we use a Dulux colour called Mexican Mosaic!MikeTrice wrote:Not quite an answer to your question, but I took the opportunity this lunchtime to try and do some colour matching.Dave wrote:Help wanted....somewhere on this site I seem to remember someone had painted the solebars of their LNER teak carriage with Vallejo acrylics...question, what was that colour.
Based on a colour sample provided many years ago by the LNERCA I can report that Humbrol Matt 62 is a very good match. Humbrol Matt 186 is slightly darker but still close. I guess both are available in acrylic versions.
Regarding Vallejo 70.846 (139) Mahogany is slightly dark but close, 70.940 (138) Saddle Brown is slightly redder but again close. I could not source a sample of their Flat Brown - will try again tomorrow.
The Vallejo colour chart includes some Humbrol -> Vallejo conversions and quotes Humbrol 62 as being Vallejo 70.843 (133) Cork Brown and Hunbrol 186 as Vallejo 70.983 (143) Flat Earth.
So how do they compare with Hornby's solebars? Vallejo 70.846 (139) Mahogany Brown is close, the Hornby shade being slightly redder that my colour sample.
To be honest all these colours are pretty close.
Hope that helps.
Sawdust.
PS I ended up mixing so many tins getting it right it lasted us for years!
Re: Daves C & W Works
Could be, it was actually a stiring stick used, and yes I think it was you who presented it to me during one of my rare visits to Pickering. I also have a sample somewhere from the black bitumen with teak colour still attached either provided by you or Dave C (I thought it was Dave C from 641 but memory might be playing tricks on me). It was very early in 641's restoration.sawdust wrote:The LNERCA sample! Will check out Mexican Mosaic.
Re: Daves C & W Works
Sawdust, there are 6 Mexican Mosaic shades in the range. I assume you are referring to Mexican Mosaic 2

I think you would have to emulate the canvas and use a very fine fabric stretched over the roof and stuck on with paint. Anyone for a pair of tights? lolMikeTrice wrote:Thought I would put my money where my mouth is and try using 50mm wide Micropore to simulate roof canvas:

Re: Daves C & W Works
Managed to get some colour cards today and it is actually Mexican Mosaic 1 and it is virtually spot on to the Sawdust paint mix.MikeTrice wrote:Sawdust, there are 6 Mexican Mosaic shades in the range. I assume you are referring to Mexican Mosaic 2
So for anyone wanting a colour sample pop along to your favourite Dulux mixer and pick up a card.
Re: Daves C & W Works
I don't suppose you have a similar reference for the body brown as used on ironwork?sawdust wrote: The solebar bar brown is not suitable for use on the bodies though as it stands out too much against the teak. I think these days we use a Dulux colour called Mexican Mosaic!

Have a look at 70YR11279, if I've read the label correctly that is.MikeTrice wrote:I don't suppose you have a similar reference for the body brown as used on ironwork?sawdust wrote: The solebar bar brown is not suitable for use on the bodies though as it stands out too much against the teak. If you've still got any old linen tracing cloth laying around that is not wanted then wash the starch out and use that - it's perfick! Stick it down with whatever form of adhesive is suitable for the material(s) forming the roof and trim afterwards.sawdust wrote:I think you would have to emulate the canvas and use a very fine fabric stretched over the roof and stuck on with paint. Dave my boy - best to do that before adding the roof fittings...
