Well if it's not the E28/39 and it's merely a mock up, it does have certain P51-type characteristic and with the clipped wingtip and C1 roundels on that wing at the back, it suggests a mock-up for the Martin-Baker MB5.

A Miles Product, i dont think its the canard although the shot could do with being a little longer to confirm.

I'd bet quite a bit that it isn't a British built aircraft, but something either lent from the US or captured from an axis airforce

If its not a Miles or a Gloster what about a Westland Welkin or maybe a Short Seamew, surely no Balliol survives.

I think we can count all three of those out, they look (according to google) nowhere near to what the photo shows.

None of those - it is British though

Regarding the Balliol, there are a few preserved - 2 in the UK and 2 in Sri Lanka. RAFM Cosford has a Sea Balliol (there's a link at Cosford with this mystery aircraft if it helps), and a Balliol under restoration at the superb Boulton Paul Association http://www.boultonpaul.com/

What's confusing me then is that it's a single seater but appears to have twin end-plate fins. I was thinking of a Miles product, but the only twin fins I know of theirs aren't single seaters.

It's not a single seated - there is another cockpit not in view, where the pilot sits in a rather different position. Not a Miles product either. If it's not guessed by around midnight I'll post up the answer
