Numbering of articulated stock.
This morning i have been re reading the accident report for the derailment of Merry Hampton with the up Flying Scotsman at Cramlington in 1926 and it mentions damage to an articulated set Nos 6441J, 6442J and 6443J. I presume that this is a triplet dining set with the numbers being applied to individual coach portions. How were mainline articulated stock numbered and does the suffix J indicate former ECJS vehicles?
Was the above set repaired?

Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.
Re: Numbering of articulated stock.
The 'J' is ECJS and as used some months immediately after the 1923 grouping.
Generally artic units were numbered (for example) 44001/2 etc (originally 4001N/4002N)
which was quite logical.
Your triplet would have lost the'J' and gained a '1' prefix.

More interested in goods stock preferably pulled by ex NER 4-6-0s or moved by little black engines with less than 8 wheels.

Ay up!
I've recently discovered the fascination of modelling coaches meself. I always thought they were simply there on a model railway to give the engines summat to do..

I just have a rake of teaks and a rake of MK1's in maroon. Everything seems to look right with them, oh I have pullmans too, but they don't get run too often.
