Oh yes indeed! :D

What I can't understand is that everyone I come in top contact with seems to share these views, yet those in power, who allegedly represent us, seem to follow their own "do-gooders" approach which is totally at odds with commonsense.

If you stand for election Graeme, I will vote for you. One little favour though: could you please see your way to reintroducing steam to the UK rail network?

I'm still clearing up and calming down from doing this lot, but here are some pictures of the Big Baldwin with most fittings added, most redundant holes filled and smoothed, and the ends of the buffer beam finally shaped after I made a decision on how I wanted them. No lamp irons yet and the cab interior is still deficient. After deciding to substiture Ross Pops for the safety valve casting that I'd been trying out, finding that I had none the right size to sit on a small raised base, and discovering how hard it was to drill through the die cast body in order to seat them, I refused to risk my smaller drill bits in the boring of new handrail holes, so the original line of the boiler handrails (lower than the Baldwin drawing) persists - but that has allowed me to have a go at a "graceful curve" of the handrails up-and-over the smokebox front. If the appearance doesn't seem to work well enough (is it slightly too "GWR"?) I'll cut them back in due course to finish on the sides of the smokebox, just as those on the earlier Baldwin moguls did (on some of those locos, at some time in their lives anyway....)
I've had a go at making the top of the dome look GCR-Robinson shape too.

Wootang - may I suggest you go back to page 112 of this thread! :D

Most impressive Graeme and great photos with excellent clarity as always.

Looking forward to seeing it with a coat of paint. Will it be in LNER lined black?

this is turning into one of your best yet Graeme, turning that ugly 'yank' loco into a graceful GC is amazing, hope it gets a full GC paint scheme

Many thanks for your continued updates, you are an insperation to me at least

Some interesting thoughts about the "legitimacy" of various versions of paint scheme, and the amount of effort required to produce those, have certainly been passing through my mind. I'm afraid I'll have to keep you all in suspense regarding my decision for the time being.

Why not go with the grey scheme from the original illustration? (Ducks behind wall before getting hit with rotten eggs!)

Anything weird or unusual will catch my interest, be it an express or locomotive

I'm also drawn to the commemorative, let's hope Bachmann will produce 6165 Valour.

I did a bit more to the Baldwin last night. I'd decided that the double-bend in the ejector pipe, leading to entry to the cab below the spectacle, was probably illogical from the point of view of ejector position, so I ground the cast step from the firebox side that had prevented the pipe from running straight for its full length and altered the pipe to match. I also slimmed down the reverse reach rod which in hindsight appeared much too thick at the cab end - nearly a scale six inches deep in fact! It looks much better now. Lamp irons all round, including top front one on the smokebox front handrail knob have been added, plus a vac pipe on the rear of the tender. Tonight I should sort out seats and crew for the cab plus a screw reverser, and maybe some better oval buffers for the front of the loco. A break in the monsoon is forecast for tomorrow so I'll try to get the loco cleaned, primer applied, and (I hope) a coat or two of actual paint.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but it kind of looks a bit Great Western, like a giant version of the 47xx consolidations. Maybe its the combination of the cab roof and handrails above the smoke box door, combined with those massive slide bars and crosshead. or maybe its just all that polished metal especially on the chimney cap :) .
