LNER diag. 347 sleeping cars

Post by Tanya »

I am trying to find out more about the LNER diag. 347 sleeping cars.
Going by the listings in Harris there seem only to have been six of them built...

1348
1349
1350
1351
1352
1354

Jenkinson says there was only one (History of British Railway carriages combined volume p357) but I don't think he read Harris well enough.

What happened to number 1353?

The number was already used on a Diagram 336 TK built at York in 1946.

The East Coast lists were not very neat, numbers being reused as older stock was replaced.

The LNER Dia book index gives the following info.
1348 D347 built 1947
1349 D347 built 1948
1350 D347 built 1948
1351 D347 built 1948
1352 D347 built 1948
1353 D336 built 1946
1354 D347 built 1949
and the dia book states 3rd class sleeping car (steel panels) 1 built Doncaster 1947.

Hope this helps.

Hi Tanya,

What's your angle on these then? Another possible article?
