Lincoln Re-signalling
Yes obviously the station area itself has to be rationalised/simplified, the local news bulletin isn`t really very railway orientated giving the impression that its all over but for the connection of a few wires.
Re: Lincoln Re-signalling
If you didn't know.
The work is on again, Lincoln is off the railway map I believe until Mon 1st September.
However this should finish all major works.

Re: Lincoln Re-signalling
For the record, does anybody know where the old stuff is going? ie Semophore signals, Boxes, old track?? I think it would be criminal if it didnot go to a heritage railway trust.

Re: Lincoln Re-signalling
Depends whether they are deemed worthy of saving. For instance, a NR architect went to look at Woburn Sands box on the Oxford - Cambridge line when it was due for closure and decided it was not, but St. Albans South is a listed building and well on the way to full resotoration internally and externally.
Sadly, cannot think of any GN box south of Hitchin which was saved when we resignalled it. What about further downalong - anything left?

I have a full set of wiring diagrams for Cadwell plus a few other odds and ends. I know where both nameboards are. I will rebuild it one day, i just need to find an Evens O'donnel lever frame, but i think not a lot else survived intact from the ECML resignalling. I have the frame from Hitchin Yard box.

Re: Lincoln Re-signalling
Not much tended to get saved when re-signalling , a lot of the block instruments just got burnt and the brass kept according to one S&T guy I knew, when the Ipswich re-signalling was done the collectors corner people came and listed everything they wanted, they never had much from East Suffolk Junction as the local railwaymen took it first on the very day it closed.

Re: Lincoln Re-signalling
I've just remembered that, when the mechanical boxes were up for closure upon the commisioning of KX and P'boro power boxes, the Chief Divisional Inspector took a chap called Howard Turner to all of them and he acted as a sort of talent scout for the NRM, putting stickers on any equipment which the NRM wished to claim. I seem to recall, for instance, that the wire worked points at Sandy, A&B, were saved. Presumably they are in York somewhere. Don't think there can be many old signal boxes left standing now on the ECML, although Eastfield at P'boro springs to mind.

A similar thing happenned with the Leeds - North West resignalling 1993 - 4.
Anything the NRM wanted went first then the preservation societies got their chance otherwise it went for scrap.
To me the most notable save was the last operational splitting distant in England saved from the Down main approach to Apperley Jcn. Where is it now?

Re: Lincoln Re-signalling
Whilst levers A + B from Sandy certainly did go to the NRM some of the outside gear went to one of our heritage railways. They have recently had a scrap drive and the 'nodding donkeys' used with double wire turnover levers are now on their way to China... I'm not sure if they had the actual point operating mechanisms but i didn't note them in the scrap pile. The remains of a mechanical searchlight nearly went the same way.
Re: Lincoln Re-signalling
Good to hear that some of the equipment got saved (from the scappy)... may I ask where we can see these and the searchlight in preservation??
Re: Lincoln Re-signalling
Talking of searchlights the whole of the GE from Colchester to Liverpool St used to be signalled by these, when approaching a yellow or double yellow ( they had two heads ) when going to green they would flick through the red aspect first,
