Not your usual type of Heritage stock but they are starting to get on a bit now.

On the NYMR York Area Group website I have started to put together a series of photos to illustrate and answer some of the more regular questions that people ask when they see a tamper or a regulator etc.

Any more comments would be welcomed.

I will be adding to it with other NYMR based plant such as the Gopher and the Cranes on an as and when basis.

I always thought that the act of packing stones under the sleepers was called tamping. Or is that a regional thing?

All that proves is, fellow Yorkshireman, that we call it Tamping in Yorkieland.

Good stuff Micky.
But in case anyone gets great frustration from unsuccessful Googling of the name, can I just say that I think the firm is (or was?) Plasser & Theurer, with the machines being Plassermatics.

And have we still got (or were they flashes in the pan?) - Ballast Consolidators, and Dynamic Track Stabilisers?

Around the 'Cross' they were always referred to as 'Tampax' machines , which led me to an embarrassing moment, on a crowded train at Reading............!!

One machine which looked to me rather amusing at the time, was a Matisa motorised trolley (I think that's what it was) parked in the down side loading dock siding just south of Wood Green station, near No.1 signal box, in about 1968/9. I think the panelled bits were dark green, but it left me with the impression of being rather like little more than a small mobile platform with a roof on struts but with virtually no end or side coverings.

I took this March 2008 at Ribblehead.

Grant Rail (as was) did have up to three machines at the Embsay railway some time ago, they used the line as a test site and we had our track improved for free. I did take some photos, but that was in my pre-digital days. Maybe one day when I have more time...

I remember that and also the unplanned event that followed on the roundabout in Harrogate.
When the Tamper fell off the lowloader and ran into the car behind. (Must admit Volvo were quick off the mark when they ran an advert a day later praising the safety cell in the car)
The wheel marks in the tarmac were visible for a number of years afterwards.
