Nar, this is her proper colour as I remember from the fifties.

Re: Duchess on test run.
Apple green does run in my veins, but on the basis that Gresley and Stanier were chums, I have to concede that the Duchesses were majestic machines. IMHO red is THE colour, and your excellent photos show a difference in shade between loco and tender. I hope it returns to red sooner rather than later personally, but first and foremost it's good that a Duchess is running again.

Hi,
I'm absoluetly not an LMS man but I'll put my two cents into the ring.
On these monsters, the best colour is red (or is that Crimson Lake) but they also look good in black. But I don't think green suits them.
Funny I don't think black suits A4's.
Nothing but nothing's as good as Garter blue, red and teaks.
Regards
Steve

I think between Duchess of Hamilton and Duchess of Sutherland running in red over the years we are due for the change.

A red Princess, 6201 passing Swindon, 24th March.
You would have thought that Stanier would have insisted on green, with him being a GWR man and all that.

Re: Duchess on test run.
To be honest, whenever I see a Jubilee or Princess in green, it suddenly becomes shockingly apparent to me how much they're basically tarted-up GWR locos. Therefore I prefer the crimson livery because I think gives them a bit more individuality. I also think the only reason I don't get a similar vibe from green Duchesses is the highly distinctive angled smoke deflectors. Personally I'd rather BR blue had won the Duchess livery vote, but sadly it quickly became a two horse race between crimson and green.neilgow wrote:You would have thought that Stanier would have insisted on green, with him being a GWR man and all that.
