It is with great sadness that we report that Alan Francis Pegler passed away this morning, Sunday 18th March 2012, after a short illness. He was 91.
It was Alan's intervention that made the restoration of the Ffestiniog Railway a possibility, from which the initial funds needed to transfer ownership of the FR to the current administration were provided. Alan was President of both the Ffestiniog Railway Society and the Festiniog Railway Company.
Alan was awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours List in 2006.
The Society sends sincere condolences to Petrina Derrington and his family.
Funeral arrangements will be circulated when known.

Very sad, indeed. We have so much to thank him for - he had so much foresight and generosity.
If a Thompson rebuild is the answer... the question must have been daft to begin with!

Re: Alan Pegler - Obituary
Wholeheartedly agree.
Only a few years ago, I happened to meet him, in his chair with helper(s) attendant, on the platform at York at the end of an NRM special day of some sort, as we were all about to board an approaching southbound ECML express.
A great pleasure to talk with, even if only for less than one minute.

RIP Alan Pegler
Never met him, but of course we all know of his achievements in the early days of the preservation movement.

Re: Alan Pegler - Obituary
Sorry to hear of Alan Pegler's passing.
Attached is a photo taken at Scarborough in 2005 when the late George Hinchciffe organised a day out for the Flying Scotsman Veterans on the Scarborough Spa Express. In the photograph Andrew Scott representing the NRM the new owner , Sir William McAlpine and Alan Pegler and in the middle as always George Hinchcliffe who managed 4472 on their behalf for so many years.
Happy days

Re: Alan Pegler - Obituary
It is a real pity that Alan did not live long enough to see the completion of Scotsman's latest overhaul.
