It didn't surprise when i read S.A.C. Martin's original post cos thats the dumb sort of thing that someone would think of doing giving a DELTIC the number 2013 rather then 9013 or 55 013.
After i witnessed a privately owned DELTIC carrying all over MAUVE livery about 10 or 11 years ago anythings possible??.
Where did I say the Deltic was numbered 2013? I did not.
That was clearly the year of the planned or otherwise run mentioned. KOYLI has just been restored to running condition and no doubt mainline running is planned in some capacity.
Again i never said that you said that a Deltic was numbered 2013 i was saying that you mentioned a Deltic in your post and that some owner of a Deltic would think of giving 'there Deltic' the one that they own a number like 2013 thats wot i was talking about.
I wish that i never posted on this topic it's been more trouble then wot it was worth.
I wouldn't worry about it Micky. According to some people the Rapture will occur on this Dec 20th, so few of us will be alive to witness the spectacle anyway.
And actually I would prefer to see 2013 run by at 100mph, as a 204hp shunter doing that speed would make a sight never to be forgotten.
I think that the problem with some of the steam preservation magazines is, that they are written by rather gung-ho types who like to get tabloid-style headlines, and dramatic photographs on their mag covers just to sell extra copies.
So they may wish to see locomotives pushed towards their limit because it makes good copy, but after some initial euphoria at any suggestion, when the owners of said loco sit down and actually contemplate the pitfalls of what might be involved they may take a different attitude.
I can't really see Network Rail countenancing any preserved loco doing 100mph on their metals, to be honest, but maybe I am just a miserable old realist.
I've just read the article, and I despair. It's not even planned, it's been mooted as an idea for the celebrations. There's a desire for a steam engine should it get beyond the imaginations of the NRM, and as rightly pointed out by Graeme Bunker, the only steam locomotive at this point which would be "easiest" to get the derogations for a high speed run is Tornado. But that's as far it goes. Nobody's been approached, there's been no planning - just an idea put forward.
And they would be the first to criticise the owners if an engine was thrashed.
I did have an online subscription to Heritage Railways for a while but stopped it before the first year was up because of the dodgy tabloid journalism ("better to report or invent a conflict than consider what might be reasonable or even *hush* research any facts" was a common theme). Sounds like Steam Railways is no better.
I switched to "Railway Magazine" (also online) which does a much better job and even includes some modern happenings amongst its pages!

Ah, but 'Tornado' is not a preserved locomotive... surely she's constructed to comply with all current standards.
During a visit to Roy Jackson's to see Retford in action, a Bachy Deltic (rewheeled of course) was run. Fast. When the speedo was turned on it was doing over 160mph. Impressive.
If I ain't here, I'm in Bilston, scoffing decent chips at last!!!!
