Re: GWR Dukedog - a wild goose chase and a trip to the darks
Seem to remember that there was an article in either Steam Railway or Heritage Railway magazine which had a photo of two Dukedogs on a farewell special. Looking at the withdrawl dates I'd say that the two were 9014 and 9017, both were withdrawn in October 1960.

I remember visiting Croes Newydd, Wrexham shed, I think in 1965, and noting a boiler dumped near a line of withdrawn GWR engines. This boiler had 9021 chalked or painted on the smokebox. I thought at the time that someone was having a laugh and it would be a boiler off a pannier but with the comment about the use of Dukedog boilers I wonder if this could be the explanation. 9021 was an Aberystwyth engine in the '50s so certainly could have visited Croes Newydd. Does anyone have any further info? It would be nice to explain this some 50 years later.
