But presumably the rotary drive machanism associated with the Caprotti gear would avoid the overrun problems with the Holcroft/Gresley 2-to-1 lever? Couple that with 71000's Harrison designed middle big end and a true winner should emerge!!S.A.C. Martin wrote:Interesting note on the front end of the possible no.2007 from the A1's website:
Derived drive for the centre cylinder - Thompson-esque!Cylinders and valve gear: The idea to model No. 2007 on Cock o’ the North meant that rotary valve gear was preferable. Some changes may be made to the proportions of the cylinders to compensate for the increased boiler pressure available from the 250lb/sq in diagram 118A fitted to Tornado. However, the Lenz gear used on the original offered only limited cut-off settings and may have contributed, in part, to No. 2001’s high coal consumption. The Trust is therefore actively considering British Caprotti valve gear using a derived drive for the centre cylinder. This valve gear was perfected in its application to No. 71000 Duke of Gloucester and offers infinitely variable cut-offs, although the 71000 SLT is still developing and refining the gear.
But it makes perfect sense, given the previous experience with Tornado, and hopefully whatever can be gleaned from 71000's palpable success story in preservation.

I don't know where the debate on the name of a new P2 concluded as I ran out of time before I could read all 19 pages , but did anyone mention a highland regiment name?
The Black Watch would have my vote.....if we had a vote.....and it's unlikely we will!

Re: So what shall we name the new P2?
Might I suggest a few possible names?
Bonnie Dundee (less of a mouthful than Graham of Claverhouse)
The Gallant 51st (Highland Division of WW2)
Cutty Sark (another notable speedster)
Johnny Cope ("Hey Johnny Cope are ye wauken yet" which disturbed my sleep as the Argyll's pipers played it for reveille back in 1956)
Deep Fried Mars Bar!!!! - not really
As for Cock o' the North - to quote Jock in the film "Tunes of Glory" "yon's a cheesy tune!"
Whatever it's called I hope I live to see it run.

If this P2 did come into being (which is still yet to be determined), I like to see if it could be named "Yamato" after the largest Japanese Battleship (and yes, the Space Battleship if anyone has seen the anime of it). It sounds a bit much, but hey, They named Tornado after a fighter jet, so why not?

Well as we are going all nautical...how about TITANIC as it sank 100 years ago this April, or Torrey Canyon to mark how good the RAF were at trying to bomb it.

Has this project actually moved on at all in these financially constrained times?
Most subjects, models and techniques covered in this thread are now listed in various categories on page1

The results of the study (ongoing) are eagerly awaited. Once the study comes back, then we'll know if it's a goer or not. If it isn't, then it's likely another project will take its place at a later date.Atlantic 3279 wrote:Has this project actually moved on at all in these financially constrained times?
One thing is certain - whatever happens to the P2 project, a spare 118a boiler is a priority for the A1 Trust.

If the P2 isn't financially feasible, do you think another A1 could be on the cards?

Things may have changed since I was an officer of The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust back in the early years of the project, (now I am a simple rank and file member), but I think the next locomotive will be of another extinct class.blackout60800 wrote:If the P2 isn't financially feasible, do you think another A1 could be on the cards?
I do not think I am speaking out of turn, but there were several of us on the Trust Board at the time who would have put a P2 first had the A1 not already been chosen.
I am sure the passion for a P2 remains but the Trust Board are professional people who understand the need for the project to be viable and the end result must be capable of running over much of the country's main lines. That would seem to be the deciding factor.
If it's not to be a P2, then as a member, I would see no harm in the Trust working together with the B17 or D16 people, both those classes are sorely missed.
[These are just my views - not those of the Trust].

Hello All,
I only remember them as A2/2 but the P2's were powerful locomotives that all carried names that were strongly associated with Scotland.
I don't like to be controversial but ........
Surely the strongest, most powerful, Scottish name the new P2 could possibly carry is :
Sir William Wallace
Let's get started !

My own preference would be to keep it in the family and name the Locomotive Tempest or Typhoon, also because of the Gresley link with the RHDR.

I will say again "Malcolm Crawley", especially following his untimely death last weekend.
He was very heavily involved with the "Tornado" project and had a long and distinguished career at Doncaster where he started as an Apprentice before working in the Drawing Office during the reign of Sir Nigel Gresley. He was the complete gentleman and a person I greatly admired, who would never make people feel inferior regardless of the stupidity of the question they had asked. He would give a detailed answer that made people feel that they were important to him.Sadly missed by a great many of his friends, one of whom I feel both lucky and humble to have been.
Regards.

If the P2 is built ,and I have doubts as to if it is a worthwhile project, what about calling it Hazeldean after North British Atlantic no 878. The LNER never used this name. Hazeldean's regular driver Tom Henderson of Haymarket was one of the early drivers of the Non-stop Flying Scotsman.
