thanks mate, but as you are aware, many people are also somewhat wary of the words of Dr T, but it does replicate my thoughts, so i guess i should not complain

RCTS Great Northern Loco History part 3a page 130 covers both the access plates (fitted from No. 1301, and fitted as built) and the change (from 1320 on) to the raised running plates. It is referring to GNR class D2 and it specifically states the changes were to increase access, and that the raised running plate was a copy of Atlantic 990's style of running plate.
