Looks like it is to reopen.
A local (Yorkshire) chain of Fish Restaurants has reportedly bought the place and is to spend a bit refurbishing it.

The Whaler group is quite successful and I must admit I may be seen in some of their establishments from time to time.

What do they mean about the Guiseley branch of Ramsden's being the spiritual home of fish and chips?

I was led to believe that the first fried fish and chips were sold in London.

If, IF Wikipedia is to be trusted to be a credible source, then

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish_and_chips

The first paragraph says that the first fish and chip shop opened in London in 1860. Then further down the page there's a photo of one of those wall plaques claiming the first one to be in Oldham, Lancs. Have to discount that one though, it's not in LNE territory.

The BBC seem to hint along the same lines,

and they are somewhat more trustworthy.

Ay up!

F & C being a London delicacy does tiew in with what I've always understood, the first shops being I believe Jewish in their ownership so a source of Kosher food for all. Fried in veg oil as well!

Hi Mrs BB

Sorry to take so long to get back to you. You sound like a sensible woman to me (apart from the lapse when you got married) and you'll understand what I mean when I say that the cats have got the best idea.

If you're stuck for a roof over your head, give me a ring!!!!

Interesting read, that, SS. Moreso, because it mentions that one of the attendees at the fish fryer's course in 2009 was a gent who lives in my neck of the woods here in Alberta. Now, given that this is a rather large area, my hopes of finding the fellow, who by now is surely up and running with his own fish and chip shop, are pretty slim.

Finding good, British style fish and chips here is not a task for the faint of heart, likewise a good British(?) curry. Anyway, I live in hopes of finding this devotee of the chippie's art. Wish me luck.

There is another alternative. You could try making your own deep fried fish. It is a bit trial and error with the consistency of the batter but there are some good recipes out there.

The ones that use sparkling water seem to come out best as they have a lighter texture. The frying medium (I am choosing my words carefully here) is not so important, even though some folk swear by using dripping. To me, that just makes the batter taste so much of dripping that the taste of the fish is over-powered.
