G'Day Gents
You must of course be talking about 'The ***field Thunderbolt' am I right in thinking that one of the coaches was an Ex, Wisbeach & Upwell coach, but in the movie, they put a coach body onto a 'Lowmac'
Such a long time since I've seen the movie, but I have it on video somewhere.

manna how are you good sir,
yes i am talking about the thunderbolt, i have recently discovered that the coach was an ex, Wisbeach & Upwell coach that was used while the engine was a 14XX
when the locomotive changed to lion (after the 14xx and th coach crashed into the river) the yellow coach (looks like a hornby 4 wheeled coach) was fitted onto a BR well wagon. the toad breakvan was used for both trains on the film

Ay up!
Lion was available as a K's Milestone Models kit in the '60s. It was made by Keykits recently but no longer listed.

Re: Oh Sam, What A Little Beauty
Have you heard of one little piece of trivia about this film; namely that when Hugh Griffith, as the old mischievous footplateman, who in a drunken stupor one night takes the 14XX for a trip down the village street, what we see is actually something like a 'plywood' (or some such) replica carcass of the loco (a very convincing one IMO) mounted over a lorry cab and chassis, and that the giveaway is reckoned to be to look carefully around the wheels of the then dark loco silhouetted against the dimly-lit (moonlit?) street's buildings, and it's possible to count too many wheel shapes to be the real loco.

Ha Ha! That reminded me of old Alf Garnet's line when he saw film on his telly of German tanks and such. "'E ain't got no bleedin' tanks, yer scouse git! They're all car'board!"

I love the Thunderbolt! I built the 14xx from a Ks kit last year and spent hours watching the fillum to get the details right! How I suffer for my art.....
It starts excellently with the shot of 34043 on Midford viaduct and just gets better from there!

Re: Oh Sam, What A Little Beauty
More trivia,
Apparently, two 14xx tanks were used for the filming; 1401 and 1456, but wooden number 'plates' were made for 1456 so that it could be used in place of 1401 when necessary.
The Monkton Combe fixed distant was painted dark green so that it would not show up in the film.
I love the brief glimpse of Temple Meads near the end, which was filmed on 22nd July 1952.

Ay up, Wootang!
The coach was a Wisbech and Upwell which only just missed preservation. Try Worsley Works - I'm sure they used to do one!
The North Norfolk have also restored the survivor as the Thunderbolt coach for inspiration.
